Buying a 98 GST whats wrong with this pic missing bov?

So tomorrow i will be going to buy (maybe) a 98 GST will be my first dsm!!!
I asked the guy to send me pics of the engine bay and look alright i noticed right away that the battery wasn't there and i asked if it had been relocated to the trunk (he said yes). But thats not the problem after just browsing through the site and looking at people pics i noticed in the pic he sent me that there is something not connected near the MAF and on others pictures that is where the bov goes and is connected to the intake.(sorry if i got the parts name wrong)
any ways if you look at the pic near the fuse box you will see what im talking about.

Info about the car 98 gst which he said has a 6 bolt swap.
he sent me the vin which i might run later.

i dont know if 6bolt have the bov located in another spot
(it says what type of bov in the craigs ad)

if anyone has any info that could help me it would be greatly appreciated

The bov on a six bolt should be right in the same spot unless he custom made his intercooler piping kit.

However I think that 5k is too steep for a car that looks like that...
 
Even if he made custom piping the recirc. should be going in right there because he has a 2g maf. And FWIW i believe 5k is to steep for that car also. Make sure you know exactly what your buying "mitsubishi garrett 16g?"
 
I wasn't planning on giving him 5k for it but about how much do you fellow dsmers believe its worth?
Can the car even run without the bov?
this will be my first turbo charged car.

oh yea i didnt even notice "mitsubishi garrett 16g" makes no sense.
to make matter worse he said he moved so i will be going to see that car he left it at his sister.
he did say he had receipts.
 
5k is i little to much i think, i sell u mine for 4k jk :p i like the 2nd better but 20psi on a 14b with no tune :nono:
 
Sounds wired man dsm are alot of work if not kept up on.Also dose car run and u need a bov to let pressure out of the system.Looj it over very good I just bought my 98 gst.Thought it had a boost leak but it jumped time and f***ed up the plugs.Now its time to tear do.
 
I also think that 5k is a little steep. I just purchased my most recent 2g a couple months ago and I only paid 2750 for the car. It has 52k on it and all the miles were accurate when I ran the vin. As far as the bov it may be lower than what you can see in the picture since it looks like the re-circulation port is blocked
 
You should check that 14b before buying if its been at 20psi for a while. And if theres no receipts then dont believe its in the car(unless you can see it)
 
yea that is why i decided to go with this one cause 20 psi and no tune i know sounds like trouble. but i could always lower it right? im not looking to run 10s or even 12s LOL im just looking for a DD to get me to and from school 12 miles away.
But it is also a 95 which is more prone to the dread words CW!!!
I was almost gonna buy a honda and throw a lil turbo on it, and then i was like WTF why dont i just get a gst! I have been looking for a gsx but thats not in my price range right now.

Ive been a fan of 2g dsm since 5th grade when i would stare at one parked across the street from my school!
I just need to get my self in a DSM.!!

also the guy said it runs. He said nothing is wrong with the car but then again who wouldn't say that in a craigslist ad.
 
Walk away. Lowball him, then see what his reaction is. There is NO tuning software and how long has he been rolling on the untuned setup... @ 20psi... No thank you. What about injectors, suspention, fuel pressur regulator, cam shafts, timing service, ect... There are a lot of question you need to ask this guy. Northern car, so check for rust. In the strut towers, and get down on ground and check frame and look at any body work. Bring an led to do this... imho, this is too much and there just isn't much in the cl post that supports 5k... Maybe 3500. Whats the milage on body and swapped 6 bolt? I mean, its only a gst, not gsx and he wants 5k...

ive been a long time reader i just never made an account cause ive never owned a dsm

For the purple gst the guy said 140k on the body
and 600 miles on the rebuilt.
He said he bought it from a mechanic and they did the rebuild


the other blue ish gst has been running at 20 psi for 2 months he said
and he said there is a little surface rust on the strut tower passenger side.
i wouldn't buy if the strut towers are rusted to shit.

Wish i knew more DSM owners in the chicago land area that could help me with inspections.
I currently only know one but i havent gotten a reply from him

I see a blow off valve on that purple one, it's just vented so that's an easy fix, 5k is a bit steep though.
 
The first 2g (purple) has a blocked off recirc port on the intake. He's venting to atmosphere with his BOV so you might be stalling out every once in a while due to this. The last blue 2g looks half way decent. I picked up my GST for 2500 in 2004 I believe?, so I know you can get a better price on a 2g than 5K!
On a side note, I love it when people post a pic of themselves next to their vehicle on craigslist. Nobody wants to see you! He's probably covering up a huge dent..
 
No its a custom mitsubishi garrett turbo. Hard to find turbo imo. Lol

Mitsubishi (MHI) and Garret are two different companies..

Also, these cars are garbage. None worth near their asking prices. Venting to atmosphere (on maf) shows they don't know what they are doing, as well as ramping boost without a tune. You will more than likely find surprises later down the road. Save yourself the headache and find one with a mature owner.

97 Eclipse GS-T gst - $4000 (Carpentersville)

Here are the problems he said it had.

this is the text he sent me
"A sticky IAC so it idles up and down and a bov instead of a recirculating valve so when accelerating hard its a bit rough when you get off the gas" (i think he ment its vented to atmosphere) (which i know are not good from reading on this site.)

This will clear that issue up. And will save you from catching a lot of flak here.

What are the "little" issues the car has. Get a complete list of mods. Ask him where he had parts installed and of there are any receipts. That will tell you a lot if he had them installed or did it himself. Doing it yourself, you have no chioce but to learn, and you'll more than likely be more careful on doing a good job...

BTW, what are you goals for this DSM? Are you looking for a DD, cruiser, autox or what? Knowing that will help us that are more familiar to DSM's.

Sounds like the timing might be off a little. Ask him if he's messed with the biss screw at all to try and resolve idle issue. The issue is 99% more than likely is because he is vented instead of recirculating. She looks about 80% stock on motor. He did a crappy job on spoiler swap. Still can see original low rise spoiler hole.

With that bov he's definitely venting when he shouldnt be. It looks more decent though

For what its worth I paid 4,500 for my spyder gst, but it was bone stock and well taken care of :)

There are PLENTY of us in lake county, you just have to know the local sites where we "shoot the shit." If you have a Facebook, look up the group called Chicago DSM-MMC Classifieds. Tons of help from that group and plenty of parts and cars for sale.
 
YO UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!!

so i talked to the guy with the purple gst and told him about the vented to air bov and i told him that its bad cause he didnt know that.
But since it has low miles on that build i think i might go with that one he also dropped the price to $4000!!!
