I'm trying to figure out what cams I should go with based on good luck others have had. I'm planning on running an hx40 on my auto 1g and was wondering what would go well with that. Also trying to figure out if I should use the stock housing or go with a bep. Any feedback is appreciated. Thank you!!!

I just asked the same question on a post last week. I am also going to run a hx40 and I was going to go with 294/292. The replies I got were that those were way to huge and after reading all the helpful info I decided to go with Kelford 272's, which I picked up at my work this morning!!

Awesome guys. I'm assuming nobody will suggest bc 272?

I guess I'll be on the lookout for a good deal on hks, gsc, or kelfords.

I love my BC272's -- gains everywhere instead of trading off low end for top end. Bigger cams made my car not very fun to drive, as it made the torque come on smoother and later. I would get another set of BC272s to go back in my 2G (they're in my 1G now) and get rid of the K272's if I wasn't planning on selling the car.

Honestly speaking I like the gains on the bc272'S than the kelfords. Ive driven both cars with both cams and something about the way the BC cams idle sounds much more deep and smoother.

Truth is you can go off what we can all tell you and what we prefer over the other but overall its what you like best. Its like asking which turbo is best many ppl will tell you all different types of set ups but I would go with whatever set up you feel best comfortable or be original and do your own set up. This is one of those threads that never has one solid answer.

You should install new springs with the cams, most all stock DSM valve springs are wore out after 20 years and 120K + miles

If you go with the smaller 272 cams like the BC272, HKS, FP/Comp you can use a good single spring with stock retainers. BC1100 is a spring I install often.

Go with the big 272 like Kelford, you need to step up the springs, Kiggley, Bee-Mad, Ferrea, GSC 5041 all work well

Have some time to read?

^^^+100, the Delta cams are almost exact duplicates of the hks 272's at a fraction the price wich is why they call em DKS 272's. Lots of people run em, good choice of you want the hks cams.

I am going to be running delta cams. They offer a very good price and they are close to the hks just like dert said.I was going to be running a hx40 with a bep housing also but went with a 20g lmk how it goes.

Aren't the delta cams regrinds? Nobody has had any problems with them? Are springs completely necessary, if I could avoid doing them for right now that would be best.

272 would be your best bet for most street applications. It would help to know what size you motor is, compression, amount of boost you are running, and what you will be doing with the vehicle. Also the car is a manual right?

I have the same dilemma since im an auto 2g and dont want to loose any low end torque. I would also give the thought of running a 264/272 combo. I think that would help a lot with spool and bottom end on a hx40 BEP...

I run the BC 272s in my car with stock springs. I bought the car this way and it seems to be fine. I plan to build a more aggressive head and will probably go with the kelfords after a nice port job and +1mm valves.

The BC 272 isn't too aggressive for the street and with adjustable cam gears you can eliminate most/all of the lope if you want a smooth idle.

With an auto I would use 272. I have the fp 272 in my auto and love it. I do however have a 2.4 but I still think they are your best choice, you would like them.

HX40 + Bullseye bolt-on turbine housing + Kelford 272's = One ridiculous street setup.

Friend of mine is using the exact same setup listed above with a ported 2G head and Evo III intake manifold- full boost is around 4200rpms in 3rd on level ground and never signs off all the way until you shift. The turbo is no laggier than a TD06 20G but pulls WAY harder. He's logging around 43 lb/min at just 21-22psi with plenty of room to grow as boost is added. The car's an absolute blast to drive.

The only downside to the Kelford 272's is they require stronger valve springs if you're going to be revving very far.

Anyone I've known who changed from BC cams to Kelfords gained a few MPH at the track at the same boost level. Long ago a close buddy of mine bought a set of BC0101's (272's) when they were first introduced and dropped them in his 20G-powered 2G....and I honestly disliked the way it modified the powerband. Seemed like it took away all of the low-end torque and "hit" that made the car so fun to drive with the stock cams and moved the power to an area that is unusable on the street. Comparing the 20G/BC cam car to the HX40/Kelford cam car mentioned above, the HX40 car definitely feels as though it brings the boost on quicker and harder despite the HX40 being a MUCH larger turbo.

a lot of people like/run 272 cams which I feel would suit you well. Id say either HKS or Kelford

Do you have any idea how different a Kelford 272 is from a HKS 272?

Make up the "lost torque" with a legit tune and a proper setup and then make more HP that you ever could before with the proper camshaft.
