does anyone know what 4g63 stands for, like what does the different letters and # represent?

well in honda's camp typically the numbers reveal the engine displacement, the first letter informs you of the engine's "series" and the last letter refers to its "revision".

unfortunately mitsubishi decided to just randomly draw numbers and letters until they were satisfied with a name.

so there is really no signifigance (sp) to the letters and #?

there really isn't. they found a common setup though with 1 number, w letter, then two more numbers. alot of their engine designations are like that

I have a feeling that the Chrysler engine code (420A) has a lot to do with what they were smoking when they put a Neon engine in a DSM.

yeah to bad the 420a engine sux, it would be cool if some one asked"what kind of engine you got in there" you"its a 420." yeah i think i would be cool but i much rather be able to say"its a 4g63 turbo" but in my case it has to be like"o its just a 4g37" d@mn 1.8 engins, they are so slow

the 420a sucks?

sure it doesnt have a turbo, but you can build an all-motor beast out of it without too many problems...after all, there are quite a few 11 second all motor neons in the U.S. now.

The 420a also has a knife-edged crank and the head was designed by Lotus. Its not all that shabby really.

I know for toyotas, the first number stands for the revision level of the engine, the next letter(s) are the engine family. The letters after the dash stand for characteristics of the engine: E=electronic controlled, F=fuel efficient, G=high performance, Z=supercharged, T=turbo, C=carbed.

corolla engine = 4A-GE
supercharged MR2 engine = 4A-GZE
turbo celica/mr2 engine = 3S-GTE
turbo supra = 2JZ-TE
paseo/tercel engine = 5E-FE
new celica GT = 1ZZ-FE
new celica GTS = 2ZZ-GE

here is what I got from a forum at kotse.com

4 - 4 cylinders
G63 - identifier code. mitsu uses G or A for their gas engines. 63 describes the displacement and series. (eg 4G62 is a 1.8, 4G61 is a 1.6)

I love the fact that the 420a's head was desiged by Lotus. Just to think we have a piece in our car from the same people that created the Espirit! :)

People have tried to figure it out for awhile. turbo sport injected, turbo sport intercooled and there are a few others i cant remember off hand.

does it actually mean anything? Or did they just make a racey sounding letter combo as a sales thing?

so than what does the "e" in esi stand for?
