My 5th gear has been popping out all by itself. Its starting to affect my 4th gear but its not nearly as bad as my 5th. im starting to worry that my 5th gear is completely dont now. I'v done some searching and i have found some threads with the same problem as me and most of the replies are saying the same thing. They say to check the cover off of the tranny and tighten the nuts if they are loose. I was hoping to try this out tomorrow so i can get it fixed as soon as possible but i was wondering if anyone knew how easy it would be and how long it would take to do this.

Its easy to do. Jack the car up, remove the wheel, drain the fluid, remove the case, notice how your 5th gear is probably trying to push itself thru the end case because its loose, replace the nut or at least torque it back to spec for now, and reinstall. 2-3 hours if you work slow. Hopefully it didn't cause any damage.

do you happen to know the best way to make sure the black shaft at the top (with the case off the trans) gets aligned to the part on the case? I just had to open this case up to replace it with another actually from a leaking crack and now I can't shift into 5th OR reverse! sure enough that's the area where 5th & reverse are. im hoping It's just my reverse switch being too tight, I'm just dumbfounded since the case only goes on one way with 2 dowel pins..

I will try this today and hopefully it helps.

1gina2g, is your lower rad hose hitting the shifter assembly?

It's not, not to hijack this thread or anything, but I was going to make a thread about this in the short future, save some space on here. Nothing's in the way of the shifter in the engine bay.

I guess what I was trying to ask in my above post, was when you have the very most back case off, that holds 5th & reverse, would it be best if you tried to put the shifter itself in 5th/reverse to move the black shifter piece more outward, to make it easier to 'align', hard to tell if it is with the trans in the car.

When I took this case off, for replacement, I had the trans in neutral the whole time, never moved anything while the case was off. My transmission particularly has just been rebuilt, never drove on it before, but my warranties voided since the company no longer exists :ohdamn:

I'm actually fixing to go in the garage now, to try and loosen the reverse sensor, not sure how far down it is, been some time.

So i am bringing this thread back because i am still having issues with my transmission and 5th gear popping out and i have done everything that the other threads recommend. In the past couple weeks i have put new syncros and bearing and 5th gear shift fork (about half of it was gone from being worn down) in my transmission. The gears and shaft in the transmission were good. I have also replaced all the motor mounts and checked the linkage. It's not nearly as bad as it was before considering the fact the before my 5th gear wouldnt even go in, but it continues to pop out easily. Please if anyone knows anything else that i can look at it would be great to know.

Ive heard of the the shifter bushing going bad, motor mounts,
Im having this current problem now, is there any pics or do it ## self links on tightening this bolt in the tranny
