So over the holiday I took my car on a longer then usual trip I was having temperatures spiking around 220 going around 50mph. As soon as I'd leave off the throttle it would drop down to 195 or so. As soon as I get back into the gas though the temperatures rise. Also, the heat is blistering hot. It has av new water pump and thermostat. Perhaps I didn't bleed the system enough? Any input is appreciated. :)

Edit: No aftermarket really... Just smic hard pipes and hard intake.

I would start by making sure you've properly bled the system, if you just replaced those things and its still over heating i would suspect something isn't right.

+1 on bleeding the system.

Also, just take your time and look visually over everything, that there's no coolant leaks, rad is clean and has good air flow, and even things like that the engine isn't running too lean causing it to heat more than it should.

I don't think it'd be the fan, he's doing 50 mph and it still overheats. If it was only overheating at idle, then yeah.

Head gasket is a possibility like said, but I'd still bleed and check everything else before. Head gasket is worst case scenario.

Have u checked for antifreeze in the oil or oil n the antifreeze? Seems like an easy check for.hg issue

Usually if your car gets warm while driving and cools off at a stop then the radiator is partially blocked. With all that's been replaced it wouldn't be impossible to get some gasket remnants or silicone loose in the system. I wouldn't jump to this conclusion but if all else checks out, it's something to look at.

I had that problem once it ended just being a faulty coolant temperature switch so check that...

Ok so I replaced the radiator cap because it wasn't holding pressure at all. Start driving and it's still overheating, and now I can smell coolant slightly, but not when the heat is on? I am so confused LOL. I don't think it's leaking through the head-gasket, the exhaust doesn't smell sweet.

EDIT: I also noticed that when I had the radiator cap off and was letting it warm up, it was pushing coolant out of the top of the housing. More air in the system?

OK question. Since the radiator cap was bad and holding no pressure, could that have let air into the system? Reason I ask is because the overheating has subsided for the most part and the overflow has less coolant in it. Could the system have burped itself of the air pockets and replaced it with what was in the overflow?

If you had a bad thermostat then that will cause overheating. Now you have to make sure the system is burped/bleed and is full of coolant.

Welp today I decided to take the overflow and clean it out. Had less then an inch of coolant in it. And the Low Coolant Light would have never told me because the wires were corroded away. It appears that there was Dex-Cool in the system at once. :/ Anywho, I cleaned out the overflow and went and bought a jug of coolant. Filled it up to the cold line and let the car warm up to 200. ( I use a ScanGauge. :) ) Filled up the jug to the Hot line and let it hit 209 w/ the heat off. Turned the heat on and dropped to back to 200. I'm going to say that I've corrected my problem, at least for now...

Does your car normally run 200F? Mine runs 180F with all the mods I have done to it. I would agree with Ryan4dc, check to make sure your fans are working, and that your radiator is not plugged. I'm saying this because I've had the same issue as you, and those were my problems on separate occasions.

200*F is fine, my car bone stock ran at 203*F all day every day. Wasn't until I put in a 180* thermostat that it lowered.

So she's still overheating. :/ Dunno what the deal is. Fans are working, coolant lvl is fine with a 50/50 mix, new waterpump, new t-stat. Maybe something has failed? I kept my old OEM tstat that's stuck open a little. About to throw that back in. :/

do a leak down test and make sure you dont have a blown head gasket . if the head gasket isnt blown then try flushing your radiator . your fans dont come on while driving on the highway. there is enough air coming through the radiator at highway speeds .

another thing i forgot to mention is when you changed the thermostat did you make sure that the jiggle pin is facing straight up . if its not then you wont get all the air out

Leak-down is on my To-Do List now. I tried bleeding it today two ways, w/ the rad cap off and coolant in a funnel while squeezing the hoses, and by doing per the manual recommendations. ( Start car, warm up to tstat temp, rev to 3k 3 times, check coolant level, rinse and repeat. ) Which I will add that every time I did this, little bubbles made their way to the top. At this point it has to be either the water pump or the tstat, both which are no longer OEM. Gonna try an OEM tstat. If that doesn't help, leakdown test. And if that doesn't, then waterpump. :hellyeah:

This looks like a perfect opportunity to make sure more people know about this. Just fill it up with coolant, let the car run til it's warm and MAKE SURE you keep it topped off. Once the car gets warm the coolant drops and it needs to be fairly full. The plunger makes putting the unused coolant back into the bottle easy.

Anyway, I wish I could help more. But this thread has already covered everything I can think of.

I am having the same problem with my dsm. Changed the thermostat water pump is new but my fans never kick on its over heating at an idol. Any ideas

If your fans don't turn on, you gotta find out why. Get a Haynes manual and do some testing. Is it a fuse, the relay, or is it the switch in the radiator?

Sounds like a bad thermostat. I recommend getting a fail safe thermo. if it does turn out to be that so it stays open and doesn't overheat next time it fails

when you changed the thermostat did you install it with the jiggle pin facing straight up . if you didn't then you won't get all the air out .
