Long story short, the previous owner of my TSi made a custom exhaust out of the stock diameter exhaust piping. His welds looked as if a 3 year old did it.

Finally, a weld broke on the downpipe to the flex pipe. So, she is open downpipe. I cut a big section of the exhaust off, the rest is still there.

So what's the problem? I am addicted to the sound! I know a lot of people say it is unbearable and annoying, but I am used to loud race cars running just headers. Except on a turbo car you can hear the turbo whistle even at idle! Even with my patially blown T-2small!

I have recently talked to some other people that have been running open downpipe on their DD for years. So I was curious to see who else is doing it, how you like it, why you choose to, power gains, etc.

I noticed a big pickup in power. But then again, I had 2 1/4" exhaust piping, Cat, and a stock muffler, so there was a lot of restriction.

I might just say screw it, take my chances DDing it, and maybe run it out the side of the bumper. I live in the middle of nowhere and drive mainly on backroads when I need to go to/around town.

Pics are welcome!

Ran open DP on my 3000GT for a few days...it was fun but way too loud for everyday driving.

i considered electric cut out on my downpipe, but after doin a lot of homework i found alot of people sayin that that their cut out "froze up" or "broke" after only like a years worth of use. i went with a 60mm external wastegate in my downpipe. this seemed better for two reasons, first, it seems that a wastegate is gonna outlast the cutout in terms of longevity, second, it was possible to install the wastegate a whole lot further up in the exhaust system. i got the wastegate mounted very close to the turbo to releive as much back pressure off the turbo as possible. i also ran a diesel boost gauge (does not show vacume) off my exhaust mannifold so i could see the back pressure change. the boost activated exhaust cut out (60mm external wastegate) is fitted with a soft spring. it takes about 10-12psi of boost to over ride the spring and open the cut out. theres no switch no wiring no hassle just pure easy and works great

on the down pipe if deleted the recirc tube off the turbo manni's wastegate. have open dump tube now, but cut out is still there and mounted close to my hx40

Thats ooober cool..;)

I've been battling deciding on what I want to do w/ my exhaust. I currently have a 3in straight exhaust w/ wastegate dump. I've ran the car open down pipe after I replaced the exhaust manifold and turbo. The spool sound of of the hx35 is music! I've been thinking about setting my exhaust up for front bumper exit. I do like the boost actuated cut out... I've seen a few of those.

Dont want to run a NA engine with zero backpressure for too long^^^^
No good for exhaust valves

I have a 3in DP to an electric cutout connected to the stock exhaust. I used to run open downpipe but its loud and draws attention. The loudness gets old after a while. Its fun to be driving normal with the stock exhaust and if some honda pulls up next to you you can open the cut out and scare him away.

Plus, it enhances the sleeper look. If you look at my car with stock rims, crap paint, and stock exhaust you wouldn't think it made almost 700whp

Is there a performance gain as opposed to running the stock exhaust? I have a leak before the flex pipe and was debating on just cutting it off and running open while I decide on my 3" exhaust set up.

I have a lightly modded GSX, and my profile is up to date. I am at the point in the upgrade path where it deals with tackling the exhaust.

Won't hurt a thing, except maybe your ears. :thumb:

In the process of making a exhaust. I put the stock downpipe on and now the car just feels slugish until I go WOT. Anyone else have this problem?

Old thread. But oh well

Soon to be! Havnt started it up yet with this but same concept.

Probably cause stock us restrictive...

i ran open downpipe on my first 1g when i could not get a new cat back exhaust completely installed before i had to go to work. for me there was way to much resonating and vibration going on inside the car, and horrible drone at highway speed.

I rocked an open down pipe for two days with my 14b, I would have drove it around longer like that, but cruising at lower speeds aka around town in stop and go traffic it got a bit noisy, so I went and had a flex pipe installed so it connected to the rest of my exhaust. Was actually really quite at Highway and Interstate speeds, sounded like a tractor at idle though. :hellyeah:

Im running open 3" downpipe right now. Car is loud as hell but i like it. In a few months ill take it to the exhaust shop and have them put an N1 can on it. 1G + Apexi N1 is freakin sex imo
