Cruising down the highway in 5th gear, doing 55, the rpms are right at 3k. Every other car i drive the rpms are around 2400~ or so. What would cause this, or is this just average for DSM's ?:confused:

That doesn't sound right to me. I have an Auto, but in 3rd I sit at 2500rpm and O/D I'm at 2200rpm at 55mph.

I'm about the same. I thought it was pretty high too. At 65 on the highway, I'm at about 3200k. Wish I had a 6th gear.

Right at 3000, i'm just building boost non stop, And its really killing me on gas just to drive down the highway at normal speeds. I'm darn clueless as to what kind of fix this would be.

That doesn't seem right to me for 5th gear. I know with mine, I'll sit at 3000-3500rpm in 5th.. but at 70-80mph.

Transmission seems ok? Any problems getting into gears? Sloppy shifter making you think you're in 5th, but maybe you are not?

No the gears shift smooth, And yes it's for sure in 5th gear because 4th gear at 55 its like 4-5k. I just replaced the clutch 200 miles ago as well.

check for boos leaks. i bought a gsx with very bad boos leakage and in 5th geari couldent go any faster than 60 with rpms at 6500. fixed the boos leak and tada! :thumb:

Boost leakage has nothing to do with engine speed. It might limit the overall rpm your able to run. Engine speed is determined by gearing and road speed. Unless the clutch is slipping. Highly unlikely in the ops case though. Sounds like someone changed the differial out

*differential

96 GSX stock, I run 3000rpm @ 65, 3500rpm @ 75mph

I pull ~30-32mpg @ 65mph and 24-25mpg @ 75mph (highway trips, no/minimal boosting)

Just Saturn I had to berry the Rpmstk get going. Fixed the boost leak and everything ran fine.

Rpm's are controlled by gearing, and gearing alone. The gearing between all components is the only thing that can change rpm. If you have a different differential than stock, that would change it, or transmission. Or clutch slipping which you would know it is the clutch if you put it in fifth gear, stomp on the throttle, and rpms go up and you don't speed up. I don't think it's likely in this case because you would have other symptoms. But if you had a stuck caliper there would be more strain on the car. So something like this could be possible.

This seems right about I correct number to me though. I don't think you have any issues.

So your saying a truck pulling 10k lb trailer at 55 mph will run the same RPMs as one without a trailer? That doesn't make sense to me. Maybe im just over thinking it. Don't mean to clutter up the post.

Unless the tires are spinning (loss of traction) yes. If you are going 55mph in 3rd gear it doesn't matter if you are pulling 15 trailers or not you will still be at the same RPM until you change gears...

It's just harder for the vehicle to get up into the rpm range so you have to give it more gas. That's why you use lower gears (or a bigger engine with more lower end torque) because in a lower gear you are in higher RPMs to get up to speed.

Running the taller Evo 5th will actually hurt mpg. These cars get the best fuel mileage around 3,000 rpm.

yep.. its either load vs torque. or speed vs rpm gears are non variable with a properly functioning manual transmission and clutch, unless you take the trans out and physically put different gears in it.

with a manual trans, the engine basically has a direct connection to the wheels, so there is no way it will change depending on load. An auto, torque converter slippage will play a roll -- more load will equal more RPM to a point (not counting lock-up).

That's odd. Majority or normal 2g turbo dsm 3000k rpm should be right around 70mph.
In the honda world when b16a tranny are switch with ls tranny's rpm do change. You should see if you have the right transmission LOL.
