Sounds weird, but that's what's going on. I have looked and looked and cannot find an answer. First thought was brakes, but why would the back brakes fart only in reverse. I did remove the shims, but I would think that would cause them to squeal. They are ceramic pads.

I have had some strange issues with my drivetrain. After spirited driving, I will get a cylical squeak from underneath the car at low speeds, and sometimes, I get a constant squeak from under the car at high speeds. I know NOTHING about AWD and have spent a good amount of time researching and I've only been able to find stuff on trucks, and I'm thinking bad u-joints/carrier bearings etc. Thinking about having a shop just do the rebuild, I don't have the tools to do it.

Biggest thing is the farting in reverse? Could it be the brakes? Would a differential vibrate on decel? It happens at VERY low speeds. Like only when I'm backing out of a parking spot.

My old talon tsi 1g had the same issue it ended up being bad rear wheel bearings.I would drive in reverse and the car would hessitate with a slight vibration it could possibly be something to look at or u can also look at the u joints. Does it make any clinging noises ?

I agree with RST303, However, on my talon i know i have two bad rear bearings and they do not fart/vibrate when going into reverse, but then again maybe there is a significant differance between the 1g and 2g wheel bearings. when wheel bearings are bad usually they make kind of a whrrrring sound or humming sound, some may sound as bad as an airplane, (R,I,P windstar jet van XD) you can always jack up your car and try and wiggle your tires to see if they are bad. Also check your diff fluid! maybe its low or has impurities in it. hope this helps :)

Alright. Thanks guys! There is a metallic clank every now and then when putting it in drive or reverse. Or going from reverse to drive and viseversa. If a wheel bearing is bad, will the tire have a lot of play of I wiggle it around?

Mine does it, no clue why, i just kinda...try not to back up too often...

Thanks again guys. I'm actually thinking maybe I actually do have a bad CV joint in the front now, because there is a slight clunking at low speeds, I've just ignored it. As for the bad wheel bearing, I think I even still have a bad one because when I take sharp turns utilizing my awd at 45mph. The car squeaks after.

Yeah, its not very enjoyable when your car farts.

the clunk you hear when shifting reverse > drive or drive > reverse is probably your u-joints. I've never heard a wheel bearing squeak or fart, they usually sound like the rumble strips you hit before a set of train tracks in the middle of no where or along the shoulder of the highway. if you think its a wheel bearing find a road with long curves that you can drive 40+ on. use the curve to load the bearings, they tend to protest a bit more and will help you atleast pin point what side is going bad.

Alright, so I'm basically looking for a complete drive train rebuild :barf: time to find someone that will trade for a FWD! LOLol

If your car has ABS it could have a ABS sensor that connects to the rear hub bearing assembly even if the wheel bearing seems fine you might stll want to replace it do to the sensor might be shot good luck.

Thanks , but I'm not even sure ABS OR Airbags were options in the 1gs (Thank god). I hate ABS.

yes that metallic clunk your hearing when you go from drive to reverse and vice versa, is probably your U-joints in your drive shaft linkages. i wouldnt say you need an all new drivetrain, just some maintnence thats all, for a few hundred dollars you could probably have your u-joints and all 4 wheel bearings( if bad) an ball joints done, if you do the work yourself.
