Some may not like the idea of cluttering the bay with more stuff, especially unnecessary stuff. But for me, and working as a SemiTruck Diesel Tech, I just really enjoy the sound of a turbo... is that so wrong?

Some cars come with what's called a noise pipe. Yup, you guessed it, it's a pipe that makes cool turbo sounds inside the passenger cabin. Now from what little info I gathered, most people deleted them ASAP because of this 'noise pipe' being on the charged side of the turbocharger system (after the turbo, before the TB) I would absolutely do that too, but I got to thinking. Instead of this noise pipe being on the charged side, why not fab one up for the intake side? The only cons I see as of now is that: A. It takes up unnecessary space in the engine bay, B: depending on how it's fabbed up could end up with more possibilities of unfiltered air leaks and C: You've got to be quite krafty to make this a clean mod.

There's also 2 ways to go about this depending on how you're set-up.
If you have speed density (no preturbo airflow sensor) you could use the intake pipe recirculation fitting and make a pipe run into the firewall somehow. This would need a small air filter since the turbo is technically drawing air through here.
If your stock you might use an acoustic effect (think two cups and a string as a kid) and secure a pipe to the intake pipe and run it up into the firewall. No air filter obviously.

I don't expect everyone to like the idea, but we're not all out to be crazy weightsavers and strictly performance. This mod would be intended to be a clean one with no ill effects besides the two possibilities outlined earlier. So please, I'm hoping to keep this as much of a constructive thread as possible.

Say w@t?

Stick a mic by the bov and a speaker in the car then you can hear it all the time

Seems like you would be "reverse"engineering what the diesel trucks do. They come factoy with unnecessary baffle's in air filer set up to quiet the turbo sound.

Befor I became a marine mechanic (vessel rigging tech) I worked as a diesel mechanic for a about 5years. I have a ton of hands on working experience with Cat 3106, 3406, Cummins M11, N14, Detriot Diesel series 60, ISX blah blah blah and to tell you the truth, I've never seen a truck come with a "NOISEPIPE"

With hardpiping going to a nice intercooler you can hear a 14b spool pretty decent.

The new mustangs and cameros have this so you can hear the classic v8 sound.

I would think it would be a neat little project. Good luck!!

I highly doubt that automotive engineers are plumbing pipes into the cabin to increase engine noise... Who knows I could be wrong

Assphincitersayswhat

Just get a big turbo!! :D I hear my holset all the time!

But really, Im not sure I understand what you're trying to describe.

Eventually I'd like to spend the time picking a bigger turbo :D

Basically an isolated pipe that delivers the sucking sound of the compressor inlet to the passenger cabin. If you've seen a semitruck with the giant air filter canisters on each side of the truck near the windows, they can really hear the turbo and I love the sound.

Really man? No. I could care less.

Hows that strut bar coming...

Ain't nobody got time for that

Input appreciated and dearly noted :tease:

Post pics of your progress.

I haven't started yet, just getting ideas

Right on man, I'm not certified in anything but electrical but my co-worker who is certified up the *** hates ISX. We changed a fan clutch on one the other day and wow those suckers are heavy and awkward.

Anyway I don't know if trucks come with a noise pipe, I'm on the same boat as you I'd think they'd engineer the system to be quieter due to such large turbos they use. I was just referring to regular vehicles such as the Volvo cars. And they're not the only one that comes stock with one because I've heard of others.

That's what I was going to say. Just get a holset.

Maybe, I haven't had the time to choose one :D

Yeah check my profile I've got the setup. Not what I'm looking for.

See, I was waiting for someone to pop in here with that! I knew I heard of V-8's doing the noise pipe too, just couldn't remember who

Quite a few actually. If the pipe is on the charged side of the system most inclined owners delete it for sake of less air volume for the turbo to fill. I want the sound of the compressor inlet so this noise pipe would be kind of the same idea but not quite.

Hey my mic idea was good its similer to what mercedes do in some of there cars.

And the strut bar is still on hold untill i get time to finish it LOL hopefully in the next month

My bad man I thought you were joking. I don't doubt that's been made but I wasn't really talking about the BOV sound... :)

Its ok buddy im now sulking in the corner because you hurt my feelings LOL. In that case then put it near the turbo LOL

:D

Did the noise pipe delete on my TTS

For a minute I was like theres no way, but then I found this.

Yep I would delete that. I want one to extend from the compressor inlet intake pipe to the passenger cabin. If using a speed density set-up one could use a hose to attach to the intake pipe recirculation port/pipe and extend it up along the frame rail to the firewall into the cabin.

Just buy a cheap steel mesh air filter and a short ram intake for when you feel like stuntin'.

My car had that setup when I bought it and it sounded like an jet airplane seat next to the engine. The only thing you could hear was the 16G spool

Huuuge difference vs a regular intake.

Er as others have suggested buy a bigger turbo.

...but you really want to have our chainsaw of an engine note plummed into into your cabin? Really? I have a 1g so you probably have better sound insulation...Heheh you could just buy a 1G.

After being a track rat/ officiating SCCA events at Watkins Glen and other tracks for eons, I've found all 4 cylinder cars (not bikes) in comparison to cars with more cylinders sounds like sh*t. There are no exceptions. Inside, outside, gutted exhaust, no exhaust, your face against the pipe, drag strip, road course or boulevard its all the same BRAAAP in a slightly different pitch. Open wheel formula cars/ serious factory works engines can sometimes be an exception. I believe our 4g63 has among the best sounds of any 4cyl car but even Subaru boxer's still sound like sh*t in comparison to something with even one more cylinder. I'd be happy to be proven wrong (and I probably am) so post vids or suggestions.

In my book that sexy Subaru burble counts for nothing when the engines are so fragile beyond stock limits aaaand its still a 4cyl. *sips hatorade*

FULL DISCLOSURE I've owned two Audi 5cyl's an one VW 5cyl Jetta wolfsburg and after driving them and hearing them on the track there is a big, big difference in aural pleasure with just that one extra chorus member. There's nothing else like it.

Heck 1G's aren't reeally even acceptable as performance sound system platforms.

So why bother.

*steps off soapbox, soothes throat with more hatorade*....

Thanks for the insight Zach. :)

But I'm not really talking about exhaust drone. I'm talking about getting the sound of the compressor 'extracting air rapidly from the atmosphere' -into the cabin.

FYI, if I could, I'd rather have a silent exhaust with minimal effect on back pressure. Something no one hears coming.

Let me post a video, this is the sound I'm talking about. Around 40-50 seconds. And hey -that's an HX35!

Roll the windows down?

Check out the 2013 Ford Focus ST. It has a something similar to what you are looking for. At certain RPM's engine and turbo noise is directed into the cabin.
