I have a manual boost controller installed. I have it turned down completely while I break in the head. Any reason why I'd still be building boost on my aftermarket guage?

Also I hear a whining noise when coming off the throttle, its not too bad and sometimes goes away, think it might be the turbo

Because you have a waste gate..And your manual boost controller can only turn the boost down to wastegate pressure..

Are you sure it's a whinning..Or just the normal spool sound + the sucking sound.Wait off on on the throttle...Your sure it's not on the throttle?

If you have the boost controller open yet still connected to the wastegate you're still going to run wastegate spring pressure, probably around 12 psi I think? Been a while since I had a 16g.

If you don't want to build boost then you've got to disconnect the wga from the flapper on the hotside of the turbo. Even then, if your wastegate system isn't efficient enough you may still see boost.

The stock 16g wga holds around 10-12psi if it's not creeping. :)

Lol makes sense.
What's a good boost level for a small 16g?

Maybe, I upgraded from a 14b, so maybe that's what I'm hearing

The turbo hanging off the exhaust manifold isn't what decides the amount of boost you should run, it's the supporting mods that allow you to run 12psi or 24psi.

Have you followed our sites upgrade paths? If not, or if you've never seen them before, I suggest you pull up a chair. Tech Guide - DSMtuners

my bad should have put more details in. Pretty much a stock car.
I Have an afpr, 3inch exhaust, dejon intake. But thats bout it in terms of supporting mods.

And heres the thing, I tried steppin on it a lil, and I guess the car isnt really moving much under boost anyways. Is this cause the boost controller is set to 0, or is it because of a boost leak?
### like you guys said I should be getting about 10-12lbs, which I see on my aftermarket gauge, but the car doesnt pick up the way it should

Hey man..Please update your profile.

Boost controller is set to 0..I'm guessing digital...Go machanical guage, and mech controller.

I don't trust digitally controlled boost, or gauge.Unless boost is set through link type EMS.

Notice when it's recommend to upgrade turbos and when you upgraded. You're missing a few mods in between (engine management like ECMLink and fuel injectors), the reason why your car feels like a dog coupled with boost leaks, etc. and no way to tune it.

This is for a 1g Talon TSi AWD, So I went from a 14b to a small 16g, Im sure a tune would only help, but Im thinking its something else. For what I plan on doing I shouldnt really need a tune.
Only reason I put a small 16g in there ### the old 14b started smokin a lil, and A lot of the people on the forum seem to run them on the 1gs with lil to no modification.

I see the steps I skipped though, the only one Im worried about are the injectors

Not only that but Ive ran this car around the block before with the small 16g in it and seemed to pick up a lot more.

Do you have a wideband gauge so you can see your AFR's? How much boost were you running when "it seemed to pick up a lot more"?

If I had to guess it's a boost leak or an exhaust leak but, without doing a BLT or having a wideband o2 sensor we're just throwing darts and guessing.

I live in Gilbert, take it out to the next meet (next Thursday) and I can look at it.

Just whatever Im running now, the wastegate pressure apperantly, I just put in new valves in the head, so I cranked the mbc down as low as possible.

Thats Awesome, didnt realize you were from gilbert too, Ill see if I can get the day off.
Im definitely going to look at it tonight though and see what I can find.

Thanks for the tips guys, wont be able to get off work though for thursday, but I think I found my problem actually, I "fixed" it, but Im thinking Im going to want to change the coupler its using. Runs A LOT better

Im pretty sure i have a big leak where the intake pipe connects to the turbo, if Im not mistaken I got a coupler from dejon(which was crap) and Im finally starting to realize it. Seems like the intake pipe keeps poppin out.

So my question to you all is what kind of clams do you use to keep that intake pipe on the turbo? and the inlet to a small 16g is 2 and a half inches right? think I need a proper reducer

Ok so I finally took care of everything on the car, (YES!!) Now, my goal is 14-16lbs safely on this small 16g.
My supporting mods are a
-dejon intake
-3inch exhaust
-2g mani
-AFPR

So nothing too major. Ive done virtually all the maintenance work on the car. The plan is to stick a vr4 fuel pump(Believe it flows 180lph maybe 190lph) by denso.
As well as upgrade to a small fmic up front, like the mishimoto z line series.

At this point, do you think Id be ready to run 14-16psi?

Ive done a lot of reading through the posts and there are so many mixed answers on the subject.

Nothing honestly. If I had to I'd run dsm link.

I'd like to get by on the stock ecu.
So far my upgrades have been very minimal, didn't think I'd need a tune with such few modifications.
That's why im going the Denso pump w/o the rewire. I wish I didn't have to mess with the fuel system too much to reach 14lbs but it looks like have no choice.
If I upgrade the injectors it'd be to something from the factory, like evo or jdm if they exist

Bigger injectors and new ECU setup are 1 in 1. You can get DSM link whenever, but to run bigger injectors, you'll need a way to manage fuel. I was taught on here that the ECU communicates with the injectors via percentage. So bigger injectors will yield a larger amount of fuel per % request.

I see what you mean, if that's the case couldn't you tune the injectors somewhat with an afpr by manipulating the fuel pressure to change the rate at which the injectors spray? Suppose its not full proof but I am curious.

I want a set of yellow-top injectors(510cc I think) this combined with a Denso fuel pump from a vr4, should run pretty nicely right?
