Dash looks great man, I'm still a fan of the hole saw diet.

Really nice build man.
Thanks Victor!

Come on Corey, that's an AEM UGEO. :nono: Thanks! I'm very happy with how it turned out. I may try the hole saw trick in the doors when I gut them. I'm going cover them in sheet metal and try to fab up a Porsche like pull cord through the sheet metal using this stuff: http://www.mountaingear.com/webstore/Gear/Climbing/1-inch-Climb-spec-Webbing/_/R-640108.htm?voucherCode=97950&gclid=CKj5sfry1rICFZGiPAodKA8A2A

If you're going to do all that to the dash, why not remove the center console and the carpet, scrape up the sound deadening and paint the floor black to match? Looks good thus far. I just recently pulled my dash to take everything out underneath. I didn't like the look of the dash without the metal outer shell, but with the filler and paint, that looks pretty good.

All of the sound deadening (actually about 95%) has already been removed, including behind the dash. I still want it to look like a car though so I'm keeping a few lightweight coverings. For instance, the carpet has had all of the padding removed from it but it is still there and the dash is just the plastic shell. If I ever do end up taking the carpet out though the floor will be painted white to match the body.

I was surprised at how easy it was to remove the metal outer shell and how decent the plastic part looked. I had no idea when I was taking it apart. Thanks, I was quite impressed with how it turned out.

I read this post to get an idea of the format for my own build journal, but after reading all this I'm a bit bashful. Theres no way I could touch half of the stuff I just read. Quite amazing what you have done, Im a bit jealous (even tho that beautiful car is going to be a drag queen).

...don't forget to pull the windshield wipers and the wiper switch on the steering wheel!

I knew it was a WB, the glare in that picture made it look like a narrowband is all.

:dsm:
The wiper system will be removed this winter. I'm still driving it every now and then right now though so can't get rid of too much stuff. I see what you mean about the glare, LOL.

Thank you so much! I'm hoping that it will be a beautiful drag queen though :thumb:

Windshield wipers aren't necessary ever since RainX hit the shelves, the 2g wiper assy. was an easy 30lbs lost and I just spray RainX on the windshield if I need to drive it out in the rain. To be honest, I spray RainX on the DD Prius and I don't even think we use the windshield wipers because the RainX works so well.

Just some food for thought.

Very interesting! I wasn't expecting it to weight that much. I may give it a try since I'm getting the DSM weight loss bug bad now.

I have a few issues that I need to straighten out after the dash removal.
  • The pop ups don't work anymore, they popped up when I turned the lights on and now won't go back down. This isn't a big deal since I will be eliminating them anyway. I removed the pop up switch becuase I never use it, but apparently the lights are tied into that. Hmm.
  • The tachometer isn't working. It's plugged in, but not responding. This is the biggest issue. I hate electrical but I'll have to dive in and see whats going on.
  • ECMlink isn't connecting. I haven't done any diagnostics yet but I imagine this will be an easy fix.
  • I don't think the interior lights are coming on. I removed the dimmer switch and I'm guessing it is related.
Otherwise, I looped the lines for the heater core this morning and she started up and runs good which is always a good sign!

The wiper assy. on a 2g is a bit different since the motor is under the cowl and, IIRC, on a 1g it's out in the engine bay mounted on the firewall. I wonder how much those motors weight that flip up/down the lights weight. :hmm:

You shouldn't have a problem lightening her up man, there's a lot of stuff to pull still!

I bought some Rain-X today so this evening I will be pulling the wiper assemblies out! I also bought some driving lights that I will be installing in place of the factory headlights like how Jose (Arctic-TSI) did.

Are you getting rid of the power seat belts?
Yes, I will be getting some lightweight seats and harnesses to replace the factory seats and automatic seatbelts.

Headlight frames and motors will save you around 8 lb if you cut down the light frame. The wiper system may save you around the same unless you still have a full wiper fluid reservoir to remove.

Close, the headlight system was 16 lbs removed and then about 2 pounds added for the new lights. Wiper system, which was just he motor, linkage, arms, and blades up front was 5 lbs. The rear system and the reservoirs were already removed.

After I just posted today that I was going to keep the interior, my wife persuaded me to gut it (and she actually helped which was quite fun). Go big or go home, right? So what started out as "lets remove the rear speakers", ended up as "lets gut the rear and not put it back in".

After that I got started on the headlights. I pretty much followed Jose's setup to a T. I got a set of Pilot 55w driving lights at Auto Zone for $25, removed the factory pop ups, made some custom brackets, and wired everything up to a switch mounted on my custom sheet metal console. :thumb:

Afterwards I pulled out the wiper which was quick and easy. Ironically it was raining while I was doing this. ROFL

All in all it ended up being 48 lbs removed today. Add that to the 40 from yesterday and that's 88 lbs removed and 212 still to go during this project.

Second pile of useless crap that was weighing my car down. 48 lbs this time.

Are you going to remove the sheetmetal inside the doors? everything that goes inside the door panesl.. Also getting the manual rack should help a lot!

Ahhh i wish i had money to buy stuff for my Dizzum..

I have big plans for the doors including gutting EVERYTHING, making aluminum sheet metal covers, making Porsche style straps for opening the doors, and making Lexan windows that will be riveted in.

Yes, I have a manual steering rack already that I plan on swapping in.

Here is one more picture of the headlights showing the bracket I made. It is a very simple yet effective design.

I pulled out 27 more pounds! This brings my total up to 111 and I now have 189 left to go!

I bought a spot weld cutter and cut out the brace that runs side to side behind the rear seats and up by the rear speaker. That sucker was 8 pounds by itself. I also pulled out the third brake light and cover, headliner, interior lights, front and rear strut tower bar brackets, the wiring for the rear wiper, rear defroster, rear washer reservoir, power antenna, rear interior lights, and rear speakers.

So far I'm over 1/3 of they way to my goal and it took less then a week and was pretty much free. I spent maybe $50 on miscellaneous supplies. Now I'm going to have to start spending some money to get the rest of the way. Lexan, sheet metal, lightweight seats, harnesses, fuel cell and pump, and exhaust piping and v-bands.

Pile #3. 27 lbs.

Nice. I'll be getting into some of the same thing here shortly!

How hard is it to yank a manual rack at the junk yard? Wouldn't mind having one myself!

Looking good Nate. I saved 18lbs just cutting out the spare tire well on my 2g, of course I made a floor but it's removable so when I go to the track it's another 18lbs gone. Something else to consider!

What about the front and rear 5mph crash beams and doing a "wire tuck" to the body harness?

Thanks! It wasn't bad to pull it out at all.

just awesome man, spent last hour and half reading this build. Great :thumb:
Thank you very much man! It's an ever evolving project.

Thanks Corey! I had already removed both crash bars prior to my weigh in. Also I'm cutting out most of the harnesses as I go. I do plan to cut out and sheet metal te trunk and back seat area similar to how it was done in Project Goodwill:
