Well guys after purchasing my 1g Talon with some of the power steering components off. (Reservoir, pump, and belt) I've tried to put the power steering back on the car since its such a pain to drive without it. So I put on the pump with a new belt and reinstalled the reservoir. Now I filled up with PS fluid but when I am driving the car the PS seems like its not at 100%. When at a stop its almost like I don't have PS at all, but when I start driving or when the rpm's go up it feels like the PS is coming around. (not at its best but working) What could my problem be?? I don't see any PS fluid leaking at all. I even jacked up the car and spun the wheels back and forth while adding PS fluid attempting to bleed it. Thanks guys!

Crap! I guess I'll drain it and buy the right stuff! The previous owner just took all of the stuff off to get to the timing belt! When I bought the car it was all in the trunk! Would changing the fluid make that much of a difference??

Most likely yes, using power steering fluid is not good, it can burn seals. and cause pump over heating. so yes drain completely and then use atf dexron 2.

I had a lexus es 300 the FSM called for atf fluid, i used power steering fluid just cause i had it, needles to say a week or so later up in smoke the pump went.

Ive never heard of using the "wrong" fluid in our power steering components.. My 1g had the ps system removed and the pressure and return lines on the rack just cut and looped around.. Found the rest of the system at a junk yard and bought regular ps fluid from autozone.. NEVER had a problem, so I have no idea where you guys are getting this information.

OP, before you go and drain that system and waste money. Try bleeding the system more. Sounds to me there is still air in the system. Start the car with the cap off SLOWLY turn the wheel lock to lock (all the way left to right) then add fluid. If you go to fast it'll bubble out and make a huge mess.. Repeat as necessary.

Also what I was thinking! I've used just regular part store Prestone PS fluid in my 2g and never had a problem thanks for the help! I will for sure try and bleed it some more.

Auto trans fluid dexron II. Straight from the service manual buddy

when bleeding the pump it also helps to have the front wheels off the ground and slowly turn the steering wheel from lock to lock

Has anyone ever tried putting a 2g PS pump into a 1g??? I know the belts are different but if you put a 2g pulley along with the pump wouldn't it work? Or is there something different about the pumps other that the belt pulleys? I only ask because I have a spare 2g pump and don't feel like rebuilding my 1g pump! I cannot find anyone that has done this! Thanks for the help guys!

As long as you can get it to bolt up and the belt to line up/tension properly there's no reason it wouldn't work. It's just a ps pump afterall so it's just providing pressure to the lines/rack. The rack doesn't care which pump is providing the fluid. I've got a 2g with a 6-bolt engine but I can't remember which ps pump I used, but I do remember not caring which one I ended up using.

Thank you sir! I guess i'll be giving this a try!!

Its been a while since I messed around with the Talons PS. My attention has been directed towards more serious problems. I did find out where my PS is leaking from on the pump! Basically It is leaking from this part of the pump. The O-ring that the arrow is pointing to is pretty fried on my PS pump. Does anyone know the part number of this O-ring? It does not look like a standard O-ring. It looks like there is a part of it that actually goes inside to seal that area. I don't really want to buy a whole PS pump rebuild kit. I just need the O-ring so it will stop leaking all over my alternator! Thanks for the help guys and here are the pictures!

If you read the article that you swiped the pics from, the sizes for all of the o-rings are listed. :)

But, it would be smart to go ahead and spend the $20 and just rebuild the pump, and you won't have to worry about it failing somewhere else.

I was just looking for that one specific O-ring. There's only a part number for the whole kit! Sorry for stealing the pics LOL

I took this picture from the FSM. hope this helps.

Edit:
there is no part number for the o-ring individually. besides from finding an aftermarket o-ring with the sizes I provided your only options are these:

1- o-ring set for the tube shown in picture (4x o-rings) P/N: MB501695

2- o-ring set for the whole P/S pump (master rebuild kit) OLD P/N: MB636433 Revised P/N: MR244546

and like if all this info was not enough, allow me to walk you to a sweet place to buy it here:

It doesn't look like a regular O-ring it looks like it has a lip that goes into the gap and then it's circular on top!

It's just a regular o-ring.

I'm not sure that a kit with just the 4 o-rings is available, at least not from all sources. When I wrote the article, our local mitsu dealer could only get the full seal kit; not a partial seal kit, the rotor rebuild kit, or the shaft rebuild kit. Notice that part # MB501695 on the JNZ site refers to a complete kit for 6/91 and earlier pumps.

It's probably because it makes no sense at all to remove a PS pump, and pull the control valve assembly to only replace 4 o-rings while leaving the other 20-year old rings and seals in place...for the difference of a what would probably be less than $10.

I'm not sure that the kit with just the 4 o-rings is still available, at least not from all sources. When I wrote the article, our local mitsu dealer could only get the full seal kit; not that kit ^ or the rotor rebuild kit

My guess would be that selling the big kit is more profitable than the former smaller kit. Its all business after all...

Edit, to your edit, I agree with your reasoning for the discontinuation probability too.
