So i just made an acount so i cant put this in the "drivetrain" section.

i have searched all over and cannot find the answer to my specific question.

i just bought a 91 Tsi awd, mods fmic, blitz bov, gm maf and 18lbs of boost.

the kid who had it before me decided it would be a good idea to take out the front axels and make a "talon drift car" it failed. from what he has told me it drove fine and then at a stop sign he let off the clutch and it BARELY moved.

so when i bought it i was under the impression that it was a clutch disk becaus thats what i was told. i replaced the clutch disk with a cheap ebay disk because i am now broke, and nothing. the pressure plate is an act stage 2 i believe. the closest thing i can elxplain it, is that it feels like thelclutch is half in and the revs keep going up with no movement, (only did it once to test clutch)

I have also been told that the transer case might be shot, but everyhting i have heard is all from people who dont know dsms. i was assuming that even if the transfer case was shot the front wheels would still give me power.

i have no clue whats going on. any help will be greatly appriciated.

thanks
sean

Did you install front axles when you did the clutch? I'd guess the center diff is toasted. Only other time I have come across this problem, I found that the rear main seal was leaking oil all over the clutch/flywheel assembly. I replaced the clutch and resurfaced the flywheel on that car and it drove perfectly. Sounds like your situation is more serious since you have already replaced the clutch.

What's going on? He broke it. Bad.

The only way you can do what he planned to do was weld the spider gears in the center differential. Instead he destroyed the viscous coupling.

What I'd like to know is how he took the front axles out. The driver side would stay plugged if he left the center shaft in, but a missing passenger side axle would leave the transmission open and let a good amount of your oil leak out. Not to mention burning up the aforementioned viscous coupling.

Slap the previous owner with a salmon, please. If you want to drift, get a RWD car. Or take an AWD, add more torque and/or skinny tires.

If he destroyed th viscous coupler woulnt there be metal shavingsin the old trannie fluid?

And I'm not sure how he drove whout them in because when I got the the passenger side wasin and the driver side had been split in half at the bearings and only half was in it. I'm not sure what this guy did but ill pull t apart today and take a look.

Ok I won't let me upload a picture but I'm not sure which is the VC I have two gears on the right and one on the lower left that is smooth with a clip around it

Ok, got the coupler out. It doesn't seem to be mising any teeth or look destroyed at all. And I noticed when I stin the ftont tire the gears don't move at all. So I'm guessing the center diff is shot...

At a bare minimum the viscous is toast. You would have to take out the center diff if you want to inspect it. Wouldn't surprise me if the cross shaft is worn.

I found. Rebuilt tranny for $100 so I'm just gonna replace the whole thing and see what happens. If it still doesn't work. Cars is gone haha

Really not a smart kid. Though there are a few cheap tranny's going around at the moment on CL. I've been browsing off and on for aftermarket parts for a few weeks and see some pop up here and there.

Where about in Everett are you? Mine's up in Marysville on jacks "again" doing timing belt and fixing some oil leaks. Don't see many DSM's around much anymore.

Testing waters on selling it at the moment. Figure can get closer to my asking price with maintenance done.

Trust me if I hd the cash I would have bought a better car haha it was cheap so I got it....should have know better....
