Hey I am looking to put a 2g awd auto trans into my galant (6 bolt, manual, 4bolt rear) I have the opportunity to grab a 1997 Talon TSi AWD automatic at a good price, which actually has a kiggly flexplate and a 6 bolt in it. The owner is unsure whether it has a 3 bolt or a 4 bolt rear. If it has a 3 bolt rear, can I just take what I need out of it and put it into my 4 bolt rear so that it has the correct gear ratio? Also, if I were to order Driveshaft Shop front axles, would I order 2g dsm axles to put into my GVR4 with a 2g auto trans?

manual and autos have different gear ratios. If your swapping the vr4 over too auto, you will need matching t case and rear diff with the trans.

2gs don't come with 3 bolt or 4 bolt. The axles bolts up to the hub like the front axles.

so lets say I were to buy this car here 1997 Talon Tsi, AWD

I would have to take the trans, tcase, rear diff, tcu, and harnesses out to put in the galant.

If I wanted to use Driveshaft Shop axles, would I order ones for a 1g or a 2g?

The auto swap into a GVR4 is tough because they have different mounts than a dsm. The 2G diff will not bolt up to a GVR4/1G subframe. The ring and pinion is the same on the autos from 89-99 in the rear diff. Installing a 2G trans into a 1g/GVR4 is even more complicated because the trans is longer and has probs clearing the frame rail. Jeff bush had to notch his frame rail in the 1G to give room for the trans. The driverside outer axle is the same as 5spd and the same for 1G/2G. The halfshaft that you will need would need to be a 2GA halfshaft because the 2Gb halfshaft mounts differently. And this part has to be 2G specific if using the 2G trans. You will need for the passenger side to use the 2G auto axle which I dont believe DSS makes. But good news is that Jeff bush has tested the factory replacement axles and went something like 2 years and 100s of passes on the factory style axles.

Your best bet if you want auto is to stick with 1G stuff. Less headache and work.

someone said this to me and I was hoping someone would be able to confirm this.

if you could source a 95/96 auto car. you could swap in a 1g auto 4 bolt LSD, and use the trans/tcase that comes with the car... if it's the same way the manual transmissions were designed. technically, a GVR4 could use a manual trans from 91-96, but the 97-99 have a different rear ring & pinion ratio. that being said, if auto took the same path, a 95/96 car would squash a LOT of your headaches.

my question is:

Is a 1g auto 4 bolt rear end compatable with a 1995-1996 automatic trans and transfer case?

Are there any 1g autos around that have swapped in a 95-96 trans/tcase?

Are there any 2g autos around that are using a 1g auto 4 bolt rear?

The t-case is the same up to 96 and can be used for 1G. The 2G 95-96 trans has the same ratios as all the 1G stuff. The bell housing is longer (has to accept lockup converter), and has a few more things wired in. The outter housing of the 2G diff itself will not bolt into the gvr4. The GVR4 is 1g specific. But the internals of the 2g diff will swap into the 1g housing since they are the same parts also. The diff carrier and the ring and pinion all share the same mitsu part number for quite a few applications.

why not just buy that 2g and change the head gasket and fix the other problems? It looks clean and they are the hardest to find out of all the dsm. It would be a shame to see a clean 2gb talon go to waste

Im getting ready to auto swap a couple GVR4s and have already auto swapped 2 1gs using a 95 trans and a 98 trans. Your quote has some incorrect data. The gear ratio differences between the 91-96 vs 97+ transmissions are offset by the same year transfer case. The rear end gear ratios stayed the same for all years. As long as you use a 97+ transmission with a 97+ tcase with either 3.545 rear diff ratio for a manual or 3.307 rear diff ratio for an auto, everything will match up correctly as far as the gear ratios. You just cant mismatch a 91-96 trans with a 97+ tcase or vise versa regardless if its on an auto or a manual.
