So I have a 90 GSX and recently my power steering hose started leaking and oil got to the alternator. It's started smoking and then glowing with some sparks. I checked it with a volt meter and 19.6volts Awww!!! So I pulled it and replaced it with a reman alternator. Checked again and still 19.6 volts and 20 volts at the battery. So my question is this normal which I don't think so and is there a voltage regulator somewhere else in the engine by to replace??????? Thanks tuners!

Your alternator should be charging anywhere from 12-14 volts loaded and unloaded. A battery should have anywhere from 12-14 volts to meet industry standards. I'm glad working at Advance Auto has taught me at least something haha

Your alternator should be charging anywhere from 13.5-14.3 volts unloaded. A battery should sit at 12.6 volts when fully-charged. I'm glad working at Advance Auto has taught me the basics, but not everything about charging systems.
Fixed. :p

O.P.- if your alternator is charging that high, it needs replaced. The voltage regulation is done within the alternator.

Did you check the charge RIGHT after replacing the alternator? That 20v charge should dissipate pretty fast. Full charge on a battery is 12.6v.

Ya I know the charging rate and were it should be. And the possible damage to be done to the battery. It's just the I just put the alternator in. I guess I got a bad one and I'll go shopping for another one.
