I was just hoping for general advice and tips on resolving this problem and helpful hints. My 98 spyder has an ongoing problem of the oil smelling of gas. I have tried several things and stressed over it too much. I am going home from Cali in a week from active duty orders and would like to fix it ASAP.. I am not loosing a noticeable amount of oil, I am not running rich as far as I can tell, it does not smoke at all. But after about 500+ miles my oil begins to thin and smell of oil. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Once you turn the car off, does it continiue to hold feul pressure? Wondering if possibly you have a leaky injector.

Have you check all the vacuum lines to see if any of them is wet from inside?.
Check your Fuel pressure regulator as well, I know you said you are not running rich, But, to me, there is no other way for the fuel to get to the oil but by running rich or a vacuum line is sucking fuel.

how many miles do u have on the engine? your piston rings could possibly be worn, the cylinders are the only place the oil and gas come close to eachother. try compression and leak tests

It has 114k. Thank y'all very much. I will have the tests done tomorrow. My BMW loving accomplice is having it done for me and I will have more answers for you tomorrow.
Many Thanks

'whoops', wrong word .. meant, 'gas'? LOL you're still okey. LOL

Do a lot of idling prior to taking off?

That will dilute oil in a quick due to system is running rich until the motor gets fully hot.

Why people who do a lot of town driving, needs to change oil more frequently since the motor never gets hot and system runs rich, which dilutes the oil down and is destroyed by a hard buildup of hydrocarbons, contaminants and what have you.

Now, how is your water temperature? Do you have a 196* t-stat in it? If you don't then your ECU is shoving more fuel in than needed to get the block hot to what the ECU is programmed to read .. which is 196+ degrees...and that will cause system to run rich and dilutes the oil.

Good luck - DSM

Yes i meant to say "fuel" in the last sentence of my original post.
I will check on the temperature and get back to you tomorrow on that post.
Addressing the idle question 1G90, I am rather religious about letting my car run for 3 to 5 minutes before taking off. Old habit I piked up from my brother years ago. The car does not idle high, nor low. It's performance is rather satisfactory. I will have more tests run on friday and have more accurate answers or you all.
Once again many thanks.

I let my Spyder warm up for a good 5 minutes before driving (let it fully warm up in winter) and I've never noticed fuel in the oil. The ECU shouldn't be enriching fuel enough to wash the cylinders. Sounds to me like you either have too much fuel at idle, fuel leakig into the cylinders, or worn cylinders that are allowing fuel to pass into the crankcase.

Compression test done today, 150 on all four.
Leak down test will be in a couple hours.
code checks as well.

I'm more belligerent: right after the motor starts and oil pressure is up, I dump the clutch to go into gear and take off .. even during winter.

Motor heats up quicker and less chances of oil dilution with the rich mixtur with the motor under load.

Done that for many years with no problems.

I would also call it leaky injectors which they'll have to be replaced.

OK fella's , now that I am finally home with my car, I have an outstanding question. How do I isolate the leaky injector?

Cycle the key a few times to pressurize the fuel system.

Next, pull the vac line to the FPR, if it is wet/smells of gas replace the FPR.

Next to check for a bad injector, pull the spark plugs and disable spark.

Now cycle the key 6 or so times....let sit for a min or 3... if you have a leaky injector this will give it time to drop fuel on the valve or the cylinder.

Now have a buddy spin the engine over... you watch the spark plug holes, if you see a vapor puff come out the hole, thats the one with the leaky injector

Well the problem is fixed. Thanks very one for your help it was the first injector on the rail.
