Hey guys, I am just trying to figure out the best exhaust setup to run with an fp big t28.

I am pretty sure I want to run a ported stock 2g ex mani and a 3" catback.
Would you guys suggest a 3" o2 housing, 3" downpipe and 3" hf cat and then the 3" catback?

Or a 2.5" o2 housing/dp/cat and 3" catback?
or 2.5 o2, 3 dp back?

What would be the best exhaust setup?

3" all the way, no sense in choking the turbo up!!

3" o2 all the way back?
Would 2.5" really choke the turbo up compared to 3"
why do I always see 2.5" o2/dp and 3" catback?

Why do I see alot of 2.5" o2/dp with 3" catback instead of 3" all the way?

Also, is the 2g (ported) exhaust manifold the best manifold I can use on a t25/t28 while retaining the oem heat shield? Or are there "better" exhaust manifolds from various EVO's that I can use with an oem heatshield?

Because 3" the whole way is going to boost creep like crazy unless you are going with a good external wastegate. go with a 2.5 if you are running an internally gated turbo, imo. plus you'll find there aren't many, if any? dsm bolt on 3" o2 housings.

Are you saying I should run 2.5" all the way? Or 2.5" o2 with 3"dp-back, Or 2.5 o2 and dp with 3" catback?

3" all the way is loud! Any loud 4 banger ends up sounding ricey. I would go with a gutted stock cat, ebay 2.5" downpipe and then either stock exhaust or something quiet. I had 3" all the way on a 97 tsi and it was so loud I couldn't even listen to the stereo. Had terrible droning resonation even at low throttle. I don't recommend a test pipe either. A cat even a gutted cat is better for sound and no cel.

I figured 3" all the way would be loud, but if I say 2.5" exhaust people start freaking out saying I'd lose 29872394874 ft lbs.

Is a 2.5" catback really that much "worse" than a 3"?

Most people would say just go with a 3" so you'd never have to upgrade again. And it's not always loud with full 3" exhaust. I have a thermal r&d catback with a 3" downpipe with no resonators or cat and the sound isn't loud at all; And no droning either. Depends on what kind of muffler though, the thermal muffler was considerably bigger compared to my apexi muffler i had before. You should actually be more worried about the boost creeping part because it's what can actually damage your engine. So...I'd say just go with a full 2.5" or a 3" with a hfc and some resonators

I have heard a flowmaster muffler and an ebay type apexi look alike muffler both on 3" pipe,, and they are both stupid loud and ricey. I think my personal choice would be the ebay type 2.5 downpipe, my stock gutted cat, 2.5 inch pipe back to stock muffler, or a pair of stock mufflers for that duel exhaust look.

Grab a punishment o2, a punishment 3" downpipe and SIM's 3" modified thermal catback and I promise that you won't be dissapointed. Will sound amazing!

I think I will just go with a 2.5" o2 and dp with 2.5" hfc, and a 2.5" catback with big resonator and quiet muffler.

Maybe one day if I feel the 2.5" catback is hurting performance I may switch to 3" catback and keep the 2.5 o2/dp.

Any really quiet resonators and mufflers you guys would suggest?

I would go with the 3". Get yourself a 2.5" o2, and 3" downpipe and catback. I recommend punishment, the prices are fair, fittment excellent, and the downpipe is a true 3" the whole way. If you are just concerned about noise, go 2.5" the whole way. I have a megan 3" catback, and its a screamer. I hear thermal is a good throaty catback that isn't too loud. They are even selling them on sale right now. If this sale was going on when I bought mine, I would have gone with it over the megan. Virtually everyone that references their thermal exhaust absolutely loves it. Sale ad is here:

If you want 2.5" then go old school and look for a classic 5zigen fireball catback :D. Those sound pretty good.
In my opinion though, screw it and go 3" all the way, loud and proud LOL. Also, why not just get a test pipe instead of a cat? Love my apexi n1 turbo back, sounds ridiculously awesome, not ricey at all:rolleyes:.
I would not go with a thermal, not a fan at all of the sound but whatever. Good luck

Seriously, would I honestly lose a good amount of power going with a;
2.5" o2/dp/hfc and 2.5" catback, as compared to;
2.5" o2/dp/hfc and 3" catback? :confused:

Get whatever's cheaper, the turbo doesn't need that much flow.

Evo 3 manifolds can use the stock heat shield. I have a FPt28 and 3" down pipe no cat and 3" megan cat back. I have no issues with boost creep.

I have an FP Big28 with 3" all the way back with zero creep. Spikes at 18-19 drops to 17-18 then holds rock solid to redline. But you're right, you won't find any O2 housings bigger than 2.5.

If you ever take passengers, like to listen to the stereo, then I would suggest a 2.5" system, and a quiet muffler. Plus, a loud exhaust invites unwanted challenges from everybody that thinks they are fast. Unfortunately,, alot of cars are quicker than a mild dsm, from a dead stop, so the loud exhaust just makes it worse when grandma whips you in her sneaky quick v6 camry.. or cousin Jed smokes you out with his hopped up duramax...Better to keep a low profile and maintain the element of surprise if an opportunity to "overtake" presents itself.

:rolleyes: A FpT28 powered DSM can easily net to 300hp+. I don't see any grannies scooting around in 3400-3500lb camary with more than 300 ponies.

Also, a 3" exhaust isn't that loud. Mine is 3" straight back with no resonators or cat, and a short Vibrant muffler. It's not that loud. The rattling of and vibrations from my poly bushings are louder than the exhaust. If threw a resonator in and a longer muffler I don't think anyone would ever look at it, even with the 272/272s

However, I will admit, loudness is subjective.

I agree. I have a ported evo3 16g FP manifold, Map o2 dump housing, RRE downpipe/testpipe to apexi n1 and it's sooo much quieter than my evo8 with stock turbo, stock Manifold, stock o2 housing, Megan DP/TP and apexi GT Spec exhaust. Mind you my 6 bolt is built and evo is stock.

Now I do love hearing the motor more in my dsm than the evo when I'm WOT. :thumb:

If I was you I would either port the exhaust manifold and o2 housing or buy a Evo3 exhaust manifold and evo3 o2 housing that way you keep the heat shield if that's what you want. Port the turbo. RRE 2.5 to 3" downpipe to your favorite sounding catback. I'd go with Apexi n1 or thermal.
