Intake, exhaust and intake does not need MS. Early on, I had all that, fully built head with cams, and only added a SAFC to lean it down some when had some dyno time.

You paid good money for that motor and work. You can do a full high performance rebuild on your own half of that. As much as you don't want to confront him and all, it's still a lot of money that was spent. I've had to contact the BBB once because was in a close situation. They got in touch with the business, and things were taken care of.

if thats the case and i was you i would wait till the DB leaves the shop and beat the hell out of him no witnesses of course and just walk away.

Take it from a tech. If he doesn't honor his warranty work, take his ass to court. If his shop isn't BBB accredited, he won't care if you call them. No one likes getting served, though. Makes me wish I lived in Tampa. I'd totally help you out.

As for your original question, check the cam timing. If it's not dead-nuts on, it won't run properly. He probably didn't have the teeth backed off before he set the tensioner.

wow 2200 bucks is a rip off big time i would drive me car right through his shop. dont stand down from that. get your car sorted out its his problem to deal with not your you are just the costumer.

Not sure there's anything to gain by trying to bully this guy into honoring his warranty. In the end I still end up with extended downtime and most likely a bare minimum job to fix the problem. No guarantee that something else doesn't come up while he's working on it. I'd rather just let it be and cut my losses like I should have when I bought the car and had a knock in the engine the day after I bought it due to an oil change. Who knows. Maybe the place I took it to change the oil blew the motor. I'd rather just come to terms that I put way too much money into a POS barely-built RS. But... its my car. At this point I am able to make smarter decisions and would prefer to leave that all in the past and move forward.

The RS is due for an oil change after the seafoam so Ill be taking her down tomorrow. Smoke seems to have cleared up and haven't felt or heard any backfiring since I changed the plugs. Most likely just coincidence. Either way, she's running good. I'll be attempting to get the wideband for myself for my birthday in October. Gives me an excuse to make another purchase for the car. Once that's installed I can monitor my AFR. Though not sure to what benefit that will be as I have no idea what I am supposed to do with the information once I get it? I mean its been beat to death that the minor mods I have shouldn't effect how the engine is running.

dont be a ####y guy sorry to call ## shit but you worked hard for your money right? he performed a job under a business. his trade is a mechanic. he worked on your car. you paid him money. you need to walk in there declare your issues that occured after his job was complete and he needs to correct the issues. if you tells you to #### off...just walk say ok...go to your phone book...look up the (bbb) better business bureo..call them and the first stage of making that guys life a living hell until he does what he is supposed is set in motion...next you take him to small claims court and get it settled.

mechanics are never to busy, they just dont want to work on something they allready completed and messed up on...

a shop does not have to be bbb certified. the bbb is there for establishments that do wrong to the public. if they are a bbb certified shop. the bbb see's them as a proven reliable establishment.

2200 for engine and 800 for tranny rebuild. Come spring I'm going to be looking for a solid mechanic locally to either do a 420a turbo setup, EDZ turbo swap, or 6g73 swap. Another reason I'm not willing to fight this guy. Already tried to get him to do something and was told the engine is fine and to keep the oil up and bring it back in 2 weeks. Called him 2 weeks later and got hung up on. Decided he wasn't worth wasting my time with. Also, I moved so the shop is about an hour away. Not to mention he took a month and a half to rebuild in the first place. Really wary about dealing with him. The downtime was a huge inconvenience.

ive seen rebuilt trans for 600$ range. you need to do your research alot more before you go picking some random joe with a wrench in his hand..

First off the AFR gauge will help you monitor another aspect of your car which would otherwise be hidden, somewhat, and it will help you narrow down problems. Regardless you will need a wideband or SAFC with a boosted build or massive N/A build.

Glad to see your car is running better now go have some paintball gun practice on that fools shop some lonely night ;). GL man!

call BBB!!!I had a tire shop put new tires on new rims for me.They put the rims face down on a machine with steel jaws. They tore up my two front rims and said "thats how we mount them here".After BBB got to them,Midas (opps),bought me a new set of rims.you should call bbb now! if you start adding stuff to your motor and maybe your motor blows in a month or two,it will be harder for you to get reimbursed.Ive seen shops that replaced bearings ang rings and call it a complete rebuild!Times are tough and people will do anything to make a quick buck!

Wow what morons. I would report him for sure. You paid good money for a service which he warrantied and if you recieve anything less it is on him to fix that. If you ordered a big mac and got a kids meal you'd probably complain and want it fixed right? LOL

Tuning would allow for me to maximize the AFR would it not? It also sounds like the next logical upgrade for an NA setup... though it wouldn't net as much performance as block, head, or intake work. The backfires aren't a huge concern. I only noticed it when I went out driving a long distance a couple of times last week when decelerating from the highway to the off-ramp. What bothers me the most is the slight smoke screen I get when I hard accelerate. As far as Im concerned Im going to need MS anyway if I plan on doing anything beyond what I've got going right now so it might be worth investing in. Or should I port the head, intake, and get the larger TB first? Just don't want to mod anymore if I've already got an issue.

On that note, if I get my wideband and find that I am running lean/rich, is there anything other than the normal maintenance stuff that would cause this?

Tuning a non-turbo :p

This shop here in Phoenix, AZ called Goodyear performance told me they needed to tune my 'wet nitrous setup' if they installed it, I LOL'd and called Lopers performance

Listen man, these guys are trying to help you.

Get an AEM wide band and go from there dude.

Best of luck to you on your endeavor!

Just a little update:

I've been pretty sick and working with the doc to find out whats making me sick so I've been out of work for about a month and I'm looking at more downtime. Due to this situation I've been short on the cash-flow. Totally sucks because its OT city right now at work and I could afford my turbo setup by Christmas if I could have worked. So right now my car is just sitting. My poor baby looks like crap because I haven't been able to wash her or anything. I'll touch base once I tackle this thing. Ill possibly just be holding off until I can get the whole setup. Still deciding on turboing (to be unique, sorta) or just getting a GSX. Guy in my area is selling his 96 TSI AWD w/ 98 bumper. Super tempted...
