I was just curious if there are any members on here that are currently active duty weather it be army marines any branch..

I dont know if this is a stupid question but it is something im wondering. So i am currently enlisted in the army waiting to ship out for bct which i am excited for!! oct 9 ft. sill getting closer haha.. Ok well i am really into cars working on cars. I was thinking about how to make some side money if i need or want any when enlisted im not sure if making a career yet but for the time being would it be possible to buy cars fix and sell? I am going to be married so i will have either an apartment or on base housing.

Im thinking like maybe if possible find a apartment with garage so i can have the room if i planned on doing so? I do not know if on base housing has garages or what..

I went to ft sill OK also, and yea why not? Get an on base house, everything paid for and keep your projects in the garage.. even as a pv1 on active duty, you wont really "need" any extra cash thoughh..

First off crash89 why dont you read my post this post wasnt asking whos in the military. I had a particular question so why dont you hop off my sh!t. Oh look there will always be dickheads like you!!

As for boostkrazy if there are on base housing available i will but i heard its not likely i dont know how true that is and so housing has garages? Thats good to know

If you're brand spanking new and single, you'll most likely be stuck in a barracks. If you're married, you can be put on the list for on post housing.

At least, that's how it worked for us infantry types.

Crash, relax. It was a good question, he might as well know before he gets there. Being a Private is hard enough as it is ROFL

I'm active duty Army 11b "infantry"

Here is how it works army wide.......

If you are single you will be stuck in the barracks, no questions... So you wont have a garage, on most military post there is a " work shop " with all the tools you could use with enclosed bays " like 40 bucks to store a car there for a month "

If you're married.....

You will have a choice of on post & off post housing.....

On Post: They will take all your BAH " basic housing allowance " BUT your utilities will be covered, you wont come out of pocket for anything.. * you may or may not get a house with a garage * its hit or miss

Off post: You will get BAH usually 1000k+ depending on location, to use for housing/bills/etc... With this option you can basically live where ever the hell you want to, but if your BAH is lets say 1100, & your rent is 900 but you have a 200 water bill & 200 heat or whatever you will come out of pocket..

Seeing how you didn't list being married you will live in the barracks.... What MOS did you pick ?

Thanks for the great info guys.. And i did say that i will be married before my first duty station.. my mos is 14e patriot missle i might change it when i re enlist but for now ittl do.. Maybe within the next year or two my mos will actually be useful in war if we go to war with iran which right now the chances are pretty high we will be going to another war.

Ok so to my understanding it wouldnt be a big deal or frowned upon if i made some money on the side buying projects and selling or anything of that nature.. I am a money guy i always look for ways to make money i know ill never be a millionare in the army as a career if i do but i sure damn want to be comfertable..

But now since were on the subject of on post and off post housing.. So if i live on post i wouldnt pay for anything out of pocket? im hoping to go to bct e2 or e3 still working on that.. If living on post housing how does food work? Me and my wife would be able to go eat at the dining facilty for free?

No you and your wife wont be eating in the mess hall as We call it, but you will get comm rats, or commuted rations, (money) for food. I live in Okinawa and my wife and I pay no housing bill no utilities nothing its nice..Ifyou are planning on getting married I ould say get your marriage done before boot camp so you can make a little extra money. you would get $250 for Family seperation every month you and the wife is seperated, i dont know about the army but the Navy we are not allowed to have your spouse with you during "A-School" MOS school for you army guys. plus you get BAH for where ever your wife is living on top of you own free room and board. hope this helps even a little bit.

Thanks for advice im planning on getting married inbetween bct and ait.. The extra money would be nice for those three months in bct but this is what me and my girl have planned when i graduate from bct so i guess ima stick with it.. So how much do you get for comm rats? is it enough to feed you guys for a month? without taking outta pocket? Im also in debt to college but i will be paying most it off with the pay i recieve from training better to get that out of the way rather then have the interest build up im currently in the process of getting loans deffered for a bit..

Thanks for all the great info guys!

It kind of depends on who your superiors are as far as it goes for being frowned upon. I buy and sell projects like none other, although I am in the Air Force. And I had a supervisor at one point tell me that I needed to quit doing that because it showed instability. But I explained that it was just side projects and that me and my wife always had the same reliable DDs. Then they were ok with it.

No, you and your wife would not get to eat at the mess hall/dfac for free. It doesn't work like that. But if you're married you will get BAS, which is a couple hundred bucks a month for food.

If you are married, you will get your base pay, BAS (money for food), and BAH (money for housing). If you are single and living in the barracks you will only get your base pay and you will be eating at the mess hall, at least that's how it works in the Air Force.

As for on living on the fort, they give you BAH, but most housing departments will set the rent to the exact amount that you get for BAH. All your utilities are covered. As mentioned, garages are hit and miss. I know on my base in our lease there is a paragraph that say you can't do anything other than general maintenance on a vehicle in your garage. But they can blow me. I've rebuilt to DSMs, VR4s, and a variety of other vehicles in my garage, I just keep the door shut so they never know.

If you live off base, you can find a place that is cheaper than the BAH and you will be able to pocket that extra money. But remember there will be utilities.

Get married before you go to boot camp. It will smooth shit out in the long run. Like going straight to housing when you arrive at you duty station instead of trying to jump through hoops to move out of the barracks and into housing when you get married. And it will get you separation pay.
