I'm heading to Tractor Supply tomorrow to get a 2"x.5"x48" bar of Aluminum to make a strut bar for my Spyder. Will .5" be thick enough or should i go with .375"(3/8")? Or should i go .75"?

EDIT: i finished up the bar and i think it turned out pretty well! i used aluminum tubing instead of a bar, and i used angle iron to mount it to the towers. by the way no that is not anodized, i just polished the aluminum and used Candy Red paint on it.

i noticed a big difference when hitting bumps and going over railroad tracks! it doesnt shake as much going over the, tires dont squeal as much when cornering and the body doesnt roll as much on tight turns

$60 is to much? You spent 80 on tires ROFL

Yea it is too much when i can make one that works just as well. And yea i bought my eagles for 80, im 17, i'm only workin 3 days a week and mist of my money goes into gas and my stereo

Ive seen them on ebay for much cheaper. Between 20 and 30 dollars. Search it up, i bought one for my 1g awhile back for 30 bucks and it got the job done. I'd look but im on my phone and its about to die. If you do make your own..post some pics!

Why do you need a strut bar?? Your profile indicates no upgrades of any sort so I'm guessing your going for looks over functionality?? And how do you plan to hook this between your struts..?

How is him wanting to make his own strut bar giving dsmer's a bad name?? If anything more power to him, if you can't post any useful info relevant to this post don't post. OP take anything from a nay sayer with a grain of salt and if you want to experiment by making your own strut bar go for it, after all its your car not theirs. But like some of the others where saying you can pick up a cheap set on ebay for around $40

What is this? Don't answer the question and go off spouting your worthless opinion day?

To answer the OP's question: it really depends on your suspension and tires. If you have a ton of front grip, then you'll need a stronger bar. If you're on the OE suspension and some crappy tires, you don't need any bar at all. Note, also, that 90% of the work that the bar does is to keep the towers from moving apart, so the bar is under tension, which doesn't require much. In short: the odds are you don't need a bar at all, but if you add one, the smallest and lightest will probably be fine.

Yep, front AND rear and all designed and engineered PROPERLY for your car and not in a barnyard. This is a example why DSM's are getting a bad name now.. :banghead:

last time i checked, being a DSMer is about modding in your backyard and DIY. so really, go pretend your superior somewhere else. ebay shit isnt even engineered, its just built and sold. most of the reviews i've seen dont even fit the damn car.

i plan on doing mods in the future, i just got this car 3 weeks ago. i plan on doing a Turbo conversion and AWD coversion. which would include suspension upgrades

you might spend $40 making a strut bar yourself depending on the material used and such. but its your car so try experimenting with making your own.

not even close. the bar of aluminum will probably cost $10 if that. then i can do the bending and drilling myself. its not rocket science. it's definitely not the first thing i've DIY'ed before.

i'm with the stock suspension (for now) and some standard tires. but i'm going to be doing mods over the years so it'd be nice to have beforehand

Please don't say "Neuspeed style"; please say "triangulated." The idea that my Evo came with something that would be called "Neuspeed style" irks me.

Thanks in advance.

^^^you just gave me an idea. Oh to the OP, hell if you got the skills son go for it.

If you make one of your own, go for a Neuspeed-style.

It connects to the firewall as well as the strut towers.

will do.

What are you going to use to cut out the plates that bolt to the strut towers?

I would use tube over bar. I assume you're attempting to be weight conscious, being that you're using aluminum instead of steel.

i used aluminum tube instead, turned out great!

I have a buddy who just bought the cheapest ones he could off of ebay just to get the strut tower plates since they are vehicle specific. He removed the bar and welded a more sturdy bar in its place. Just another option I figured I would throw out there.

Can you explain in more detail how you mounted it?

I have a strut bar with no tower mounts and apparently nobody sells just the mounts.

Good for you making your own stuff man, thats how all the old school guys did it ...it it breaks just fix again...instead of hoping on to ebay AGAIN and buying a new one. Now if you made stuff of the engine or suspension or any moving part.. I might advise against that...thats where you should spend the money.
