So I'm picking up my block from the machine shop today and assembling the engine this weekend. Should be ready to drive late Sunday if not earlier. During my break in time, should I rig my wastegate open so I don't build any boost pressure or just run it like normal? How would it drive without the boost? Is that even good for the engine?

Drive it like normal, if everything is put together correctly it will be fine, and if its not, well than it will fail regardless of wether or not you drive it like you stole it or like grandma going to the grocery store.

Motoman break-in for the win. As mentioned, problems will rear their head quickly regardless if you boost or not. Just be sure to change the oil multiple times and you will be golden.

I should be icing my car up from jack's transmissions today or tomorrow. They told me to just take it easy on the csr for about 500 miles (or two tanks of gas), change the oil and it would be good to go. We should link up spyderdrifter once your car is done.

Thanks Junfan. I think I'll be taking that approach. Never new about the purpose of the cross hatched hone job. Just knew it was there. Thanks for the suggestion Gravedigger, I normally do, but just didn't feel like it at that moment. Will be reading those though.

Nice, I hope they've done a good job on yours. Sounds like a plan though. Mine should be up some time Sunday.

Your welcome and good luck with the build.

What my friend did with his '66 Impala with a 327: We got it back together, got it started and went out on the country roads doing short WOT pulls, town driving, fast and slow driving.

We got back after that two hour run and did the first oil change. We just used non-detergent, straight weight 30w knowing it was going to be break-in oil

It did smoke some but knew that the rings weren't seated-just cutting off the honing grooves in the block.

By the next week, the smoking was gone and still doing variable runs of slow, fast and WOT.

By the end of the month. did compression check and numbers straight across all 8 cylinders. All of this turned the motor into the smoothest running V8 one can ever seen.

Not bad. I'll be doing similar with mine. But it'll be just a little longer. Broke a damn piston ring so now I gotta order new ones. No one in town carries 0.040 over rings in stock. I only managed to get rings on 3 pistons and get my crank and main girdle put in. So pissed when it happened.

Even though I read motomans engine break in post I'm still a little worried about running my engine hard. Well, more researching to do!

I'm a fan of after letting a fresh engine idle to operating temp driving it how you would be everyday, IE if your going mash it then do so from the get go if not then don't. never had any issues with this on any of the cars I have or have helped rebuild.

I agree, I just finished up a stock rebuild on my 6 bolt and I pretty much went out there and drove it normal. How quickly the rings seat has a good amount of what type of rings did you use? and other variables.
But, 800+ and I see 155 on all four.

When I did my rebuild, my body (a well known ####### in my area) told me to turn my MBC all the way down and do 3rd gear pulls to redline on the highway and let to car reduce speed under its own power for about a week. Other than having some spark issues with my plugs, the car has strong compression and started waking up after I turned it back up to 26lbs :hellyeah:
