what's that intermittent "clacking" from the engine?

it follows the engine's rpm's. comes and goes. varying degree of loudness. you can hear it in a lot of older cars. sounds like its an obvious thing to an experienced mechanic. anyone know?

hi i have this thingamaggigy and it sounds like this other thingamaggigy and its coming from this part of the engine by the other thingamaggigy.

what does it sound like a video maybe?

Older cars = out of adjustment lifters
DSM = lack of lubrication from the early gen lifters, most people update to the better design

...Pretty vague and random, but entertaining.

I actually do have a vid somewhere on my phone which I will find but I'm telling you, it's a "clack clack clack"ing sound that follows the rpm's and if you heard the vid you'd go "hmm... interesting clacking noise -that follows the rpm's" say it to yourself clack clack clack. now to the speed of an engine. now stop, then start up again in a bit then repeat. I'll have the vid up a bit later...

I bet you're right, though I just replaced my head. it is a rebuilt head from J&C enterprise or something like that, and it looked basically brand new when I put it in.

Brand new lifters can tick too. It's a design flaw, not a maintenance issue.

money says it is the lifters ticking, infamous issue even with the revised ones but not as much

okay... it's "lifter tick". I got lifter tick. I never thought I'd say, but I did. thanks. and no easy way to get over it. well, better lifter tick than the clap.

Mine has an occasional tick from time to time until oil pressure builds up to quiet the one down, but in a whole, motor runs pretty quiet.

Welcome to the world of the DSM and similar with hydraulic valve lash adjusters.

Stick around, "Pilgrim", and you'll learn more.

hydraulic valve lash adjusters? what's that? some ancient technology like carburetors? what's the alternative? yeah, didn't mean to join this crazy underground cult. I was just trying to figure out how to fix this new cool blue car I grabbed off craigslist. now at least once a day I'm reading up on this engine called "4g63", distant earth cousin of r2d2 and c3po, serving the affordable customizable sports car needs of mankind. I never had a name for my engine. it's kinds weird.

Omg I've been drinking and can detect the sarcasm. But lifters sound like a huge suspect. A cheap and good idea is to update to the newer 3mm lifters. It's not necessary but always a good way to eliminate the lifter issues. I picked mine up for $73 off of eBay. Follow the break in procedure and maybe a few days of driving and no ticking from those lifters for a long time. But a better description of where the noise is come from will help. Pick up one of those want plug thingamajig and try to find where the noise is coming from.

want plug? I have a stethoscope I'm waiting for a reason to use. so far I've found my cat's heart beat, so I know it works, and my cat is alive thank god. I won't be digging into my head anytime soon. I'm still recovering from a long scary head replacement job that left me a spiritually weaker mechanic so now I don't want to meddle with anything unless absolutely necessary... and next on my list, after I tackle this annoying idle issue, I have to fix my grinding gears, whether I rebuild my tranny or just replace it. so... I'll learn to like my new tick. but I appreciate the suggestion. I very well may do that down the road, especially if I ever have to go back in there.
