I am rebuilding my engine again and am on a somewhat small budget. I would love Wiseco pistons and eagle rod setup as before but its expensive. I was looking on TheDSMGraveyard.com and found a set of stage 1 hypereutectic pistons with rod combo. I am planning on running a mall turbo with around 8 pounds of boost so nothing extreme. I am also getting my block bored .20 over. Please do not tell me to get the Wiseco and eagle rods. My question is, would this piston/rod combo be stronger than stock under boost. Would it be a better choice to go with this set or stock setup. Thank You.

I wont use any hypereutectic piston with boost. What is your set up n goal ?

If you are not going to make way more that stock horse power. Then I would keep the pistons and rods stock. Use a good quality hyper. Other turbo cars like the Grand National and Cyclone didn't come with forged pistons. If you do up the horse power limiting boost, knock and fuel mixture is the key to keeping your engine together.

The stock rod is really the weakest part of the bottom end. The rods will let go before anything happens to the pistons, so at this point i would just use some oem pistons.

They will be for a 420a. I am not looking to go much in boost. Only around 8psi. I would hope for around 275 to 300. I will be doing a .20 over bore to the cylinders. I am just wondering if I should go with the hyper pistons and stock rods. Would the stock rods hold up to 300hp with 8 psi. Any help with what setup to go with as the forged wiseco is a little pricey for me right now. I will be happy with that hp goal as I love the car to much to get rid of it. Any help on a setup will be greatly appreciated. Thank You

A s16g turbo. I'm probably gonna run that turbo with whatever piston/rod setup you guys recommend. I would like to use the hypers or use stock. I would only be at 8psi so nothing serious.

The factory pistons already in the 420A are hyper-eutectic aluminum. The factory pistons are forged powdered steel.

You can get Manley, Eagle or Crower rods for the 420A motors. The Manley forged rods are available through Real Street Performance out of Florida (I have a set in the hands of my machinist now for my Neon motor build underway). You can find the Eagle and Crower at Modern Performance (Big with the neon guys). I'm going with 20 over JE Pistons in the 10.5:1 flavor. With the NEW magnum SOHC head and the block being milled flat just a bit the compression was just over 11:1 but the machinist is correcting that so I won't be too radical on compression since this will still be a pump gas DD/Auto-x car.

if you have stock pistons now that are in good shape get them cleaned up and get upgraded rings with better rods. but everyone knows 8psi will only last for so long. you will want to boost more eventually but if your content with it you can always upgrade down the road. what are you going to tune with since your on a budget?

Here ya go, hopefully your heads won't explode or anything.

I think that some people are under the impression that those pistons are an upgrade because dsm graveyard is selling them as a stage 2 performance piston when they are just a stock replacement piston.

DSM Graveyard - Your #1 Source for DSM Parts!

I see that, they are OE replacement pistons though, you can find them on Rock Auto as well. They're nothing special and are still a pressed fit which is not the easiest of thing to get around for someone who isn't a skilled machinist or engine builder. It won't take much to tweak a piston skirt.

For the price I can understand why people would want to go this route on a budget build. But I would caution people to consider the additional expenses necessary when going in to an engine this deep. New pistons will need a machinist to assemble and boring the cylinders true (to whatever bore spec) plus the complete gasket set, oil pump??, etc etc it all starts adding up quickly.

Thanks for the help everyone. I had the wiseco and eagle rod setup in my last motor. I didnt want to drop all that money again but I really dont want to be doing this again son. I wasnt sure about those sealed power pistons because I dont hear much aboit them. I guess wiseco/eagle it is again. Also to anwser the question asked earlier. I will be running a full megasquirt system since im going all out anyways. Thanks again everyone.

Im not sure how you run full MS, but dont want to spend money on forged internals?

Do it right or do it 2X.. Just get forged Internals.. Idont know why i see this question pop up so often : <

Cheap reliable fast. Pick 2.. there is No exception..

You said you had eagle/Wiesco in the last build.. what happend to them that you cant use them again..? The more important ?, what hapend to the motor.. I would be more concerned about wht a solid setup gave out, then trying to cut corners on the next build.. your still not addressing the issue.

Hyper piston are NOT forged. Would Not use Hyper piston in any forced induction role!

Hyper pistons are cast. Cast metal has a lower strenght value than forged. Always use forge, unless you want to keep rebuilding the engine?

To the OP I have had this same setup on my Daily for the past 4-5 years while on 10psi and have had no problems. I used turbo rings and race bearings of course as well. I have had a set of forged internals to drop in but been too lazy LOL one day though.

well this is for a 420a but again my point is dont use hypereutectic piston on anything that will see boost. there was only one brand that was saleing hypereutectic piston for the 4g63t and there are now off the market bcause the where cracking pistins left and right
