I noticed that when i start my car, it runs fine. but when i start driving around and when stopped at a light its starts to smoke. i rev at 2k for about 10 sec and stops. I thought maybe valve guids but it would do it at inital start then stop. and i dont think piston rings because it would smoke all the time. any ideas?

Let's start with, What color is the smoke at idle, Blue, Grayish/Black, White? On another note, Did or have you figured out what the problem was with your transmission problems?.....never heard back?

If it's bluish gray smoke, it's oil most likely. Smoking at idle and take-off makes me think valve stem seals. How many miles are on the motor?

The tranny was electrical.. doesnt stick anymore but the noise its making.. The torque converter. As for smoking its the grey smoke from birning oil.

Its got 155k miles on it.

Don't valve stem seals leak when you are sitting at idle? Cause that is when vacuum is at it's highest in the cylinders since the throttle plate is closed.

So wouldn't it make sense that it smokes when you stop at lights, and quits after you start driving?

Valve seals - teflon valve seals gets rock hard and starts to break apart after age and exposed to tons of heat.

Replace the seals and goodbye smoky idling.

Practically every gas engine will suffer from this when they get that much age on them - can't get away from this situation.

a 17yr old, 420A motor with 155k on it, SHOULD be buring oil at idle due to hardened and cracking valve seals.

thanks guys for the input. I was thinking may be valve seals. But new to these motors so thought it better to ask some who are familiar. thanks again fellas
