POST ALL OF YOUR BASIC QUESTIONS HERE.

1) Yes, it's possible.
2) Yes, it requires some basic cutting and welding.
3) Read through this thread before asking any questions. And read through this article written by Jacob Isaac-Lowry.
4) If you're serious about specific parts of the swap, and/or you're in the process of the swap and you have specific questions other than "is it possible", then please post in this thread.

I was just wondering how hard it would be to convert my 1999 GST into an AWD GSX or if its even possible. What all do I need to swap and how hard is it?

My friend had a 99 Spyder and i think got a user Eibach Pro kit for FWD first and it sagged BAD and thats when he found out he should have got the AWD kit. He didnt get it cause he went Tokico/GC's instead.

Is that thing about the Spyder spring having a higher spring weight true compared to the AWD spring??? I have a Spyder and planning to do a konis and lowering spring, so what mr popups is saying is true im better off getting an AWD lowering KIT??? That seems kinda far fetched to me but on the other hand spyders & AWD(2G) do come close to there overall weight so it does make sense after all!!! Great looking out!!!!

Yeah the front struts/springs shouldnt matter so long as its a FWD turbo model. However, the Spyder is heavier in the rear than a regualr FWD eclipse so if your changing the springs use some that are made for a AWD eclipse.

i know there are plenty of write ups about doing it, and plenty of threads. but I'm just looking for some hands on experience from people who have done it. i blew up the motor in my GSX the other day, and am picking up a Talon TSI FWD this week. i am planning on keeping the blown motor, all my bolt ons and mods, and drive train components needed to do the swap at some point.

Why not take the engine out of the talon and put it in the eclipse?

This..

It really depends on if you have all the necessary tools and equipment and not to mention time.. It took me just around 70 hours total to do my swap. I was unemployed and worked on it steady for about 7-9 hours a day for a week.. It isnt all that hard to do if you're patient and have at least a little more than basic mechanical knowledge..

the thing is. the talon I'm picking up, I'm immaculate. i live up in new england, and its hard to find clean shells. there isn't a spot of rust on this car. and my GSX is kind of hacked up tbh, and i bought it like that, and not proud to admit it. this talon, is completely stock, besides the built motor.

Not very difficult if you have the right tools. The only thing about the swap is that it takes forever, i did it in about 2 days time (could of been one day, but dam that rear brake line).

Not very difficult at all actually, just replacing parts and swapping fuse boxes. You need to be patient though and work at a steady pace to keep from having a brain lapse.

It is FAR easier on a lift with a trans jack. I did almost all of mine on the ground and wish I d of waited for a lift. It could be done in a day or two. You need access to a welder, plasma torch or cut off wheel. Be prepared for bolts to stick and break. I drove the Gsx-Spyder today for a 100 miles and it was a blast.

i don't have any experience with welding, or torches. but have a good friend of mine who is an awesome fabricator, who i was planning to go to for any of the custom parts i needed.

Have you done a AWD swap? No fuses have to be swapped... much less a whole fuse box.

To the OP. The most frustrating thing I found was getting random parts I didn't have. Although I must admit I did it the more difficult way. I did not have a parts car, so I was sourcing everything over the internet. Finding things like rear knuckles, axles, and intermediate shafts are a pain. I also needed random OEM things that took for ever to get. Like gas tank straps, no dealer in the states had them, so the dealer had to get them from japan. It took a month.

I did it to my spyder with no power tools but a dermal for the subframe bolt holes...

Car was in the driveway for 8 days. I did it after work everyday. So if I took a couple of days off it would have been 2 days.

Also I went from a 5-spd to an auto. So I had to swap alot more than someone doing an equal transmission swap.

When you get done with the swap, you'll go ' This was too easy, I must have missed something'. Haha!

well thanks for all the help guys! like i said, i have a GSX that ill be using all the parts out of so that isn't any issue. and i also have a friend, who is great with DSMs, but has never done an AWD swap help me out. this won't be happening for a while. i just wanted to find out whether or not it really was as much of a nightmare everyone locally has told me -_-

I have a GST 2g and was wondering if you can do this samething if you use a talon AWD. I now there differant cars but would just like to now for sure

I must be misunderstanding something. My 97 GST Spyder can't be converted from AUTO to MANUAL, then also converted FWD to AWD?
I was researching on doing both. I'm also eventually going to do 6bolt swap.

Why cant it? What are you misunderstanding??

I am picking up a 97 GST that is for a good price. but it is a 6bolt swap. however I want to convert it AWD. I have a TSI AWD that needs a better shell and this is a pretty good deal I just want to know which wire harness or will this be a Frankenstein of all Frankenstein harnesses?

Sometimes its cheaper to do an AWD SWAP as you can find FWD turbo cheap. Also, wow this thread is showing some grey hairs haha. Funny how easy it is to do the swap, and how much information there is speaking of this topic around these days.

Is the TSI AWD? Also, what year is it?
