well, i was tightening an exhaust manifold nut the other night, and the stud pulled out of the head. Whats the best way to go about getting this stud back in there? Weld and re-drill? Heli-coil? I have a large exhaust leak and im guessing its caused by not having one stud above one of the exhaust ports.

I would give the heli-coil a try, I think those bolts are suppose to be around 22 ft-lbs so the heli-coil should work just fine.

i did heli coil and make sure to use red loctite

anyone happen to know the threads of that bolt? where do you all buy heli-coils from? i have never worked with them before

the heli coil size will go to 10x1.25. stock studs are 8x1.25. you can pick up heli coils at any auto parts store. another route to go is a time sert which is easy as long as there is still some thread left to tap into.

Yea I used the time serts on the bolts in the head for the valve cover. They work nice also, no more stripped out valve cover bolts

I got my heli-coil set from the auto parts store.

Do I have to remove the manifold to heli coil if threads are striped in the head?

I removed mine on both studs that i stripped on my head. Does the gasket leak from there too? If so replace the gasket and stud at the same time. Cheap insurance..

I have problems with my vc bolts as well, so can someone please elaborate on these "time serts"? Thanks (sorry for thread jack)

This will give you more info, have a read. It is just a threaded insert. For instance on the valve cover I drilled and tapped the M6 holes out and tapped them for M10 serts. The original M6 bolt will thread into the sert that is installed into the head.

Thanks for the link and info, but i am still a little confused why drilling and tapping for an m10 will fit the original m6...

Because the thread insert outer diameter is bigger than the bolt that will be threading into it. The inside hole is a m6x1.0.

Yes you will need to remove the manifold.

You can simply use longer bolts. The threads in the head go deeper then you think. Works great and no drilling/tapping. I have 3 long bolts in my outer valve cover.

Dang it, I just got my new turbo put on. So I gotta spend another 250.
