It seems you keep having problems with Sparktech's ignition.. Would you still recommend it yourself?

So clean.. Jealous of the Kosei's still.

Nice 2g as well, dsmtwins2g

If I can get the factory Tach to work with it then it would be a great part to buy.

The instructions that it came with had errors that luckly I was able to figure out and correct. Plus they are kind of vague on what to do with the wires exactly.

I've tried calling sparktech but most of the time I don't get an answer, then the rest of the time I get told that he's looking into it. I doubt I'll hear anything back.

That's truly an awesome build. I'm in Pensacola aswell.

Thanks :thumb:

Were you at the meet as well?

Hey man love your 1g ,I saw it out at GCA this past weekend ,I drove my black awd. Swapped 2g out there.love the cop setup, also heard Mohammed broke down on the way the meet LOL?? Jacob ( the local dsm twins in p cola)

Thanks man. Yeah I seen your 2G its pretty clean. I don't know why but not too many people around our area run speed density. Was that an E3/16G on your car?

Mo and my buddy Chuck pulled the head off at his shop. The head is trash and the bottom end is rebuildable. I think he's just going to cut his losses and part the car out. AMS stage 5 (or whatever the highest CNC head they do) is a grip to replace, plus he'd have to have the block rebored and have all new pistons, plus all the machine work.

awesome build !!!! your thread is exciting:D

Thanks man,it's a 20 ported and clipped, for sure everyone likes running the evo maffs,I love Sd though very easy to tune and adjust your vc tables.that sucks to here ,he had a nice setup, there was a black 2g auto the broke down just a couple yards down the road LOL you could see it from the parking garage.
Anyway sorry to thread jack, keep the build up man!

So I got burnt out on the talon and haven't touched it in a couple weeks now. I have yet to figure out why I can't get the factory tach to work with the ignition system. Since I've taken a break my buddy Chuck has left the DSM world and bought an Evo. He got an Evo 8 and got into an accident the night he was tunning it and it got totaled. He purchased it back from the insurance company (it only has 45k on it) and bought another Evo 8 with 90k on it. Also our buddy Mohammed bought a rolling chasis Evo 8. The plan is to pull everything off the 90k Evo and put it in the rolling chasis, then pull everything off the 45k Evo and put it in the 90k chasis.

So here is what I've been doing since I haven't been messing with the Talon....

Let me say, working on an Evo is nothing like a DSM. They are a PITA! But i'm sure repetition is the thing, do something enough and you'll get good at it. After all of this I'm sure Chuck and I will be pretty decent at wrenching on Evo's. Deffinately a fun learning experience.

chuck that had the orange talon and bought the silver evo??
looks fun man and nice shop for sure

No thats Joe you're talking about. Chuck is the guy in the pictures. He had a turquoise 1G AWD that he had for 11 years. He sold it and bought the two white Evo's pictured. Its fun to use because its something new and different, the Shop is Chucks, 24x30 I believe (3 bays, lift in the middle, air and power lines on reels, 90gal craftsman pro compressor, badass fridge/cooler, sound system, Tig welder, all the tools you need, and soon to have wi-fi LOL

Any pics of the crashed evo?

The crashed Evo is the one on the left (white with no wing) in every picture. The front frame rails are bent. What the owner wants to do is take everything off the crashed Evo that is in better condition than whats on the 90K Evo and swap them. The motor/drivetrain, interior, so on. Then whats left I'm sure he'll be parting out on EvoM or some forum.

okay after a month off of messing with the talon I finally got in the mood to fool with it.

After installing the Sparktech COP (coil on plug) CDI (M&W pro-12 ignition box) Pro system, I found out the factory tach didn't work in the car. The reason is because the setup bypasses the connector that the factory coils plugged into that the tach got its signal from.

After calling Sparktech and getting the answer of "oh well most people who run this setup use an external tach" and calling other shops and getting no answer to my problem, I got the multimeter out and tried figuring out what the hell to do. There is a tach signal output wire on the CDI for an external tach, so I knew it had to go to the tach somehow so it can get a signal. Well I pulled the gauge cluster out and pulled the plug that goes to the gauge cluster out on the tach side and looking at schematics of the wiring I figured out which wire went to the tach and cut it in half. I ran the tach signal wire to it and tied it in then with my fingers crossed I fired the car up.

SUCCESS!!!!!

Also got four JM Fab hubcentric wheel spacers (10mm) for all four wheels. I needed these to run the FD wheels with the Hoosiers mounted on them.

Awesome build man. Love how the ratchet install came out! Seems like you've spent plenty of cash so I have to wonder why you want to toy around with that 20g? Nostalgia!! Seriously those dinosaurs are laggy turds

The Buschur 20G isn't bad, and the reason behind it is my buddy and me wanted to prove a point to some guys locally that you don't need a big Turbo to go fast, just the right setup. After I finish the suspension, the plan is to send the head off to get ported and a magnus cast intake manifold, shearer exhaust manifold, and a FP 3794 will go on along with other mods to support the larger setup (bigger cams, head studs, so on). Next on the list for now is a welded center differential.

Got my rear subframe & mustache bar bushings in the mail today!

I've got everything back together on the car and installed the Avid motor mounts (trans and driver side), it was a PITA to get these things all bolted up but I got it. I had received a call a couple weeks ago from extremepsi asking me if I'd had any issues with them since I was one of the only people who had purchased them that hadn't called back complaining about fitment. They told me others have had issues stating the mounts were off. I was relieved when I got them on and everything went together after a little work.

Now I'm having issues trying to reset base timing with the COP. I don't have the old factory coil any more so I can't install spark plug wires to set it. I've tried hovering and placing the pickup on the #1 coil but couldn't get a signal. I've seen a wire for sale online that is used for adapting a coil on plug for this I just need to find it, it basically plugs into the coil and gives you a wire so you can place the trigger over it for a signal. I need to reset the base timing because it got off when I was swapping the CAS out trying to figure out the tach issue.

Next on the list is to get this rig retuned and take it back to the track finally. Also still need to install the staging brake.

After a couple trips to the track next is installing a welded center diff and dropping the subframes to install new suspension bushings and get the subframes powdercoated.

Also got some parts from my ole buddy Chuck who parted out his 1G and sold the chasis.

Jays Racing Alternator relocation kit, Toe Eliminators, and a copper gasket for the turbo manifold for when I upgrade the ported 2G one.

I'm running 28psi and a 100shot of nitrous on Q16. Hopefully I'm making more than 350awhp :thumb:

No doubt, maybe at the next big car meet or something.

Import Showdown is on the 23rd on June in Montgomery, AL.

I'm going to try my hardest to get this thing retuned and make it to this event and see what it will do in the 1/4th!

so in total how much has this car put you out? you have done a lot to it, and I am wanting to do the same thing to my car. how much was it all? and do you have any advice for me as I do my car

I have $8k, maybe $9k total in it so far. I have a 3 ring binder with all receipts for everything I've bought for it, or machine work, and such. I'll probably put another $7-10k in it before I'm done.

Advice? Not real sure, if you have any questions I'd be glad to help. I have yet to put up any numbers (track/quarter mile) so I don't know how much worth my advice is on building a DSM. Just 1/8th mile which I only made 4 passes in this car.

Very nice build man. I never usually read these, but love it when I stumble upon a nice one like this.

Are you using, a direct port, or a single fogger I didnt catch that?

I would love to see the results on 100 shot. Should get down the 1320 in a very fast matter LOL.

Thanks!

It's a wet kit with the nozzel located in the 2G throttle body elbow.

Before I was shifting at 7.8-8k rpms, with the nitrous I'm going to go up to 8.5-9k rpms.

Also I'd like to say,

I've seen time and time again people build their car around a huge turbo. They go out and buy a 35-42R size turbo, running a GM maf, stock port head, pump gas, no suspension mods besides shocks and springs or coilovers, and so on.
Not really flowing enough air or running enough boost to make an efficient amount of power to support the large turbo. As well as having crappy 60fts, just making hot air with the turbo that is too large for the power they are wanting to make.

I don't build cars around a turbo, I prefer to get the chasis and motor done and ready so when I do upgrade the turbo it will be ready and able to handle the change. :thumb:

Like stated earlier I'm sure I can get a 10 out of the lil old 20G before it gets retired and put on the shelf. Then I'll upgrade everything needed at once to support the larger turbo. Probably going to go with the FP3794 HTA, I'm hoping with that turbo I could be able to squeeze an 8 second pass out of it eventually. If not then it would be back to the drawing board and going with one of FP's 42R frame turbos.

That of course is months away. Until then I'm just focusing on finishing it with the 20G and giving it hell at the track.

Small update

I got my valve cover and chromoly mustache bar powdercoated gloss black

Also, resetting the timing with a COP setup is a PITA!

So I wasn't able to make it to Import Showdown. I went out Friday night and tried to retune the Talon but we couldn't get the injectors to cooperate. Fusterated, I came home and snatched them out and sold them, ordered a set of ID 1000cc High Z injectors with plug and play adapters and a resistor box delete plug.

Untitled-1.jpg

Looking to go retune next week, hopefully with successful results this time.

Last of my suspension bushings came in today.

Front lower control arms, front subframe bushings, and driveshaft bushings.

All of the suspension bushings won't go on the car until I get it retuned and back on the track and make some passes.

Got a Moroso sealed battery box that meets NHRA rules/regulations to replace the walmart special non sealed box I have now. Also got a Moroso battery cuttoff switch.

Waiting on my trans cooler to come in now, trans temps got up to the 190's last time I drove the car.

2012-07-03_10-48-51_787-1.jpg

Finally got a larger Transmission cooler.

B&M super cooler 11x11x1.5

IMG_20120709_131219.jpg

Now I just need to fab some brackets and shoe horn it where the factory side mount and the current location of the trans cooler is.
