Some of you know or dont know I am active duty Army. I love the army and now am having my shot at the Army promotion board next week!

I wrote a short bio and want as many opinions from Army or military professionals as possible to edit and make my bio better. So take a look and if you have any adivce besides study:cool: I'd love to hear it.

Remember the bio will be read by the board members and said aloud by myself. Also by this promotion board MOI, my bio should answer the CSM (Presidents) first two topics.

Currently my focus area of study is on the first sergeant that intimidates me the most. He will ask the hardest and most grueling questions.

My name is Specialist Leon *REMOVED*, my wife's name is *REMOVED* and my daughter's name is *REMOVED*. I was born in *REMOVED* May 23 1987. I graduated at Orange Park High School May of 2005, June of 2005 I joined the Army and went to OSUT at Fort Benning Georgia for MOS 11C; Indirect Fire Infantryman. There I learned to shoot move and communicate as an infantryman. I got out of the Army in Apr of 2007 and I came back into the Army in Oct of 2007 and went to AIT at Fort Lee Virginia to reclassify to MOS 92A; Automated Logistics Specialist. There I learned the ins and out of logistics. I have deployed with 2-12 CAV in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as a dismount for CSM William May's PSD. During that time we conducted; Dismounted IED patrols, presence patrols, humanitarian missions and consistently during throughout the deployment PSD to the CSM. Education is important to me and to the Army which is why currently I am a student at Hawaii Pacific University with 26 Semester Hours. I've served with the 25th Infantry Division, 4th Infantry Division, 1st Cavalry Division, and now proudly the 130th Engineer Brigade. I have earned the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal 3 times, and the Army Good Conduct Medal twice. My short term goal is to get my AS in Computer Science, ASE Certification in Automotive Repair and Maintenance. My long term goal is that before I leave the Army, I train as many soldiers as I can, and leave a lasting impact on the United States Army in the most positive way. I want to be a NCO to follow in the footsteps of all of the great leaders Non-Commissioned Officers before me. To display and validify the roles of The Non-Commissioned Officer. To lead and mentor not only soldiers but members of my community

Thank you I did alittle revising, my motor sergeant felt I should add some stuff to it. With your advice I felt I should add alittle more than he suggested

Please let me know what you think.

You need to either say great leaders. Or great NCO's not both.
NO ONE IS MORE PROFESSIONAL THAN I.
Study your nco creed. And general soldier knowledge.
Don't freeze up and you will do fine.

Sincerely.
Ex combat medic ;)

is this something your going to be speaking? or will someone be reading it?

edit: LOL just re read the beginning of the post. my personal advice to you is if the bio doesn't have to be word for word, with what you hand them to read. i would make a bullet like of topics to cover, and make it up as you go. usually public speaking in this way ends up being more natural, and a lot smoother.

Usually you will be in a room with a couple of first sargeants and his command sargeant mmajor. He should be reading it.

I've just personally noticed with me at least, no matter how many times i read and try to memorize something, i will stumble throughout the presentation. feels as if making a bulleted list, takes a lot of the pressure away, and therefore yields better results

Okay I have the final draft. I will post it up tomorrow. I left it on my work computer. :\

With a bio, You want to keep it for the most part to the point. The boards not going to care about you being a dismount with csm so in so,Even if the csm is in the room. Say something along the lines of I was deployed with UNTIS NAME, in support of Operation Iraqi freedom DATE. Then through something in that would really stand out, but not really needed. Also, name schools, and the biggest awards you have, for example WLC is a must and if you don't have it you better have a good as excuse why you haven't. No you don't want your bio to be 30 seconds long, but don't put stuff in your bio just to fluff it up or make it longer than it really needs to be. The board members(made up of four 1sg, and the commanding sergeant major) will loose interest if it seems to them that you are rambling on. They may even stop you mid sentence. Do not become nervous when When I say Your Sh#t has to be tighter than a dolphins blow hole. However, after reading the time in service I take it you have a pretty good idea already. Also, Dates of everything is not necessarily needed, but again it doesn't hurt. For a short term goal MAKE SURE you say obtain the rank of SGT. First, dont say obtain the rank of E-5, second (from personal experiance) the CSM crushed my nuts on this one. After saying my short term goals He nailed me by saying " What no obtain the rank of SGT in your short term goals". It was more of a nut crusher remark, but not really a fail at the board. Other than that your bio seems solid, but just more then I'd care to remember. Just don't over do the bio and fail to nail down the NCO creed, and your basic warrior level 1 knowledge.

Since DSM BANDIT had to through his prior MOS and such I guess I will :D

Rank:SGT TIS(FEB 2008-FEB2012) MOS Primary:11B(Infantry), MOS secondary:B4 (Sniper)
1ID Big red One (Fort Riley, KS)
Deployments: OIF 2008-2009 Camp Stryker, OND 2010-2011 Jss constitution

^^^ I agree with pretty much everything stated here. Your bio is you telling the board a little about yourself. Don't name drop, don't worry about specific dates after your date of birth and anniversary. Don't forget to mention the short term goal of being recommended for promotion and attaining the rank of SGT. Also, validify isn't a word and neither is reclassify. Use words that are proper usage and not slang. You are went to Ft Lee to attain a new MOS. You want to validate the role of the Non Commissioned Officer. Having been to several boards and taken several soldiers to the board myself I think you have a strong bio. 17 years of doing this and I have yet to see a soldier recite their bio exactly as it was written. Don't sweat it. Nail the NCO Creed and remain poised and confident.

Josh

Ok I'll play the MOS game as well:

1995-2000 AH-1F Cobra Attack Helicopter Repairer and UH-1N Utility Helicopter repairer (67Y10 and 67Y20/ 67N10 and 67N20 under the old MOS system)

2000-current HH-60A/L/M Utility Helicopter Repairer/Supervisor, Safety NCO, ALSE NCOIC, Paratrooper, Air Assault, Instructor and Special Ops qualified (15T3S) among many other jobs! LOL

Josh

^I agree with the two above me.. you don't need to make your bio so long since you may be asked to recite it to them and you're going to want to be able to do it without trying to remember everything in such detail. My advice is to make sure you know the NCO Creed, the Soldier's Creed, and the army song. Everything else will be a shot in the dark, so just study different things and if you don't know the answer either tell them you don't know the answer to the question at this time, or say something and be loud and confident. Mostly the board is about how you react to the questions presented to you, they want to make sure you're confident and can speak to them without any issues. I was never asked to recite my Bio but I did write it out and it was short and to the point.

Good luck! :)
I joined around the same time as you, hope you do well! Just don't be nervous!
92B All wheeled vehicle mechanic here.. E-5.. attending ALC in a month and then dropping my warrant packet.

My only advice is to revise your prose to flow and sound as professional as possible. Know your board questions from the study guide, the 8 TLP's , 5 components of the OP-Order, and your general orders.

Maintain your professionalism, sit at the position of attention, and don't pause and say "um". You'll be fine!

I made sergeant, E-5 in less than three years, but I was an Infantry Squad Fire Team Leader after only year and a half, and entered the Army as an E-1.

Thanks everyone all this advice is gold. Some of it my E7 hasn't even mentioned! I will make these corrections right away and post the revision at 1000 my time, so about 5 hours.

On a lighter note. I have been out for about 6 mo. Today at taco bell I see 2 nasty girls walking into the taco bell. A SPC and a SGT. I immediatly felt embarrassed for the e-4. His shamshield was upside down. His boots were so ####ing dirty they where unserviceable. Both cargo pockets open, crooked hat, missing wallet pocket button. I hate that shit. I hated to see soldiers off post in uniform with no headgear. Be IN UNIFORM or don't be IN UNIFORM. And the Damn E-5 either didn't notice or just let it go (gotta be blind).

Someone would have gotten dusted off. It makes all soldiers look like shit in the civilian community.

Thanks for serving guys!

Here is another draft less fluff. more error corrected. I'm about to go to a Mock board which is a practice with leaders in my company

My name is Specialist Leon *REMOVED*, my wife's name is *REMOVED* and my daughter's name is *REMOVED*. I was born in *REMOVED* May 23 1987. If you are going to go with this, then I would rephrase it a little bit:
"My long team goal is to train as many soldiers as possible, leaving a positive impact on the United States Army. I will be an NCO that follows in the footsteps of the previous Non-Commissioned Officers before me. I will lead, mentor, train, motivate, and ensure the success of the soldiers under my hand."

Or something similar to that.. Anybody else want to chime in?

Again, good luck bro! (For my long term goal I said I wanted to be a CSM, even though I know damn sure I'm not trying to stay on the enlisted side :p)

I didn't get to proof read myself, my son is being a butt at the moment, so if I typoed up there I'm sorry! LOL.

sounds a lot better man! good luck and thanks protecting my freedom!

I would have corrected both of them. In a nice, professional way. That shit reflects badly upon everyone else.

In the 101st they both would have been doing pushups all day long for crap like that ROFL

This is good stuff here, I've already started taking in tons of good info being back in Garrison life. I'm no where close to a board but these are some good examples. Good luck Leon!

12B - PFC, 15 months total time in service with 6 of which in Afghanistan doing RCP
