All boost goes into valve cover. Bad turbo seals?

I get 20+ psi at the Tb pipe during a boost leak test but when I test it at the turbo inlet all the boost comes out of the valve cover (out the oil cap/pcv valve hole)

I was told all the boost is leaking past some seal in the turbo and going into the motor and that after a rebuild I should not get any boost getting into the motor. Its a 14b and I actually just rebuilt the turbo 3-4 months ago with tradergregs kit. When I first finished/installed it had 0 shaft play. Now it has a fair amount of side to side but 0 in and out.

So I have two questions:

What most likely caused the 14b to develop shaft play so quickly? I just recently tracked down some of these big boost leaks I have and I was thinking i possibly "overspun" the turbo. I've been driving around for a few months at 16 psi with big leaks present making it work harder. I also have the turbo oil feed from the ofh, I've read that sometimes its too much pressure there and it could overoil it but would it do damage like that so quickly? I dont have a oil pressure gauge so I dont know the numbers coming from it. Just wanna make sure if I rebuild it again this time I wont run into the same issue.

And would the moderate side to side play even cause all the boost to leak past the seals? I was under the impression that moderate/heavy in and out play is what generally causes this type of leak (hence why ppl sell turbo with some side to side, even calling it "normal") Only other thing I can think is a leak at the compressor cover gasket but I rtvd it pretty well but would that even cause something like this anyway?

Im so close to fixing all my leaks guys help me out! :hellyeah: Thanks

Check ## pcv valve. If its stuck it will let pressure from the manifold into the VC. I would think the turbo would need have massive play in it to let that much pressure bleed through the drain. But check and or just replace ## pcv valve

The pcv is fine, I tested it at the Throttle body and it was holding 20+ psi. Even when I removed the pcv and blocked off the hose all the air is coming out the VC.

You probably didn't get the balance right on the turbo when you rebuilt it. The wheels and nuts have to be lined back up on the shaft how they came off in order for it to be in perfect balance. Up and dOwn is bad. A little in and out is acceptable.

But to answer your question yes the turbo seals are blown

14b are cheap buy a used one with minimal shaft play (side to side).
Maybe upgrade to 16b?

Pm Jusmx141. He can and will rebuild your turbo to brand new. Or sell you one already done to cut down on down time

Next time with a turbo rebuild. Have a pro do it:thumb:

I just followed Jusmx141's guide here to the letter.

http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/art...303828-td05h-td06-turbo-rebuild-part-1-a.html

The rebuild overall was pretty straight forward and it doesnt say anything in the guide abt the wheel and such having to be "lined back up" nor do I see how you could mess that up anyway. Everything pretty much clicked right in.

Would overruning cause shaft play like that in the first place so quickly?

Edit: Compression is 150 150 150 160 btw

WTF WTF

please don't post bad information.

I have found that keeping your mouse off the reply button when you have no clue what you are talking about eliminates 99.99% of completely false, idiotic posts.

I had a t25 with in out shaft play, no up/down play, that didnt smoke or leak. I have really very little experience with turbos other than what i have seen first hand and read about. Shaft play at all is bad from what i know.
