So I'm looking for something to round of a decent sound system in my car.
I used to have a Infinity Basslink 200W RMS in my old dsm and it didnt quite have enough kick for me, but it only weighed about 25lbs so ok on the weight end of things.
Plus it burned out after 3 yrs.

I'm looking at a MTX self contained unit, its about 35 lbs, but its 400W RMS which is a lot better than the basslink and I think in the range I'm looking for.

If anyone has any ideas I would totally be open to them.

Oh and I'll be rocking infinity reference components up front.

Thanks

Aaron

I've got a Sound Ordnance 8BP in my car. Its a 8" sub in a ported bandpass with a built-in amp. Weighs about 18 lbs, small, fits easily on a folded down seatback. Sounds great, with especially with a head unit that has sub gain. I usually play it with +8db from the head unit. Is loud enough to vibrate the backglass and shake the mirror on songs with good base.

Only about 140w though. I couldn't imagine anything other 250w whilst driving. Though it really does depend on the style of box and speaker you use. But with this thing on a full 15db gain Its pretty gd loud.

Edit:

I have my sub aimed at the back glass, as I understand it that makes it reverb a bit, increasing the volume.

You can get away with a lot less if you adhere to a few basic sound principles, the largest being that if you bounce sound off a solid surface, you pick up 3db, effectively doubling the perceived volume. When I was playing with systems in my 1g back in the day, my best was either bouncing it off the back glass going forward or what I ended up going with, a sealed 10" box in the passenger rear corner facing up. It hit real hard with 200w RMS and didn't weigh much at all. I'm tempted to build that same box again, I wish I knew where that ended up.

I have to Phoenix gold 12's with a box I built to fit in the wedge of the hatch right behind the backseat. They're pointed to the back glass too and they can hit pretty hard. I would suggest getting a bass adjuster knob that runs from your amp. I installed mine on the bottom of the dash to where I can reach it while driving but its stillout if sight. Its nice being adjust the bass by twisting a knob.

I have 2 alpine 10 subs and they kick. I have I think american legacy 600w amp with a bass knob in my glove box. I know its not a lot of watts but its enough to shake my mirrors. There 600w RMS. Heres a pic for you to get an idea of how big they are.

You could get them in a smaller box.

This is lightweight 1g sub setups, not show me whatever sub you have.

Why racing seat only on passenger side?

BECAUSE RACE CAR!!

:p

Weight is mostly gonna depend on box size and the material it's made out of. I would try to keep it on the small side of you're worried about weight. Maybe just a 10" in a small ported box.

im selling some bad ass subs for an eclipse check em out!

2 15 SSA Icons FOR SALE - YouTube

2 15s is hardly gonna be lightweight. I think the op is looking for stuff under 35-40lbs. And I would guess something he can easily disconnect and stick in the garage on track day.

Plus his car is a 1g, and have you ever seen the trunk depth in a 1g AWD? With the spare tire and cover in you have make 15" of depth, add in a couple inches for the box, you would be hard pressed to get a box for 2 15s in the back of a 1g AWD. If you did you wouldn't have much air to move unless you aimed them forward. If you did that you'd loose the gain from bouncing it off the back of the car / glass.

2 15s would go great in an suv. A small hatch back would be GREAT with one 12 in a ported box with good amp.

For real. I had 2 15's in my mustang hatch.. I had to take them out because it was too rediculous from it being a hatch. One 10 or 12 is good unless you wanna be those guys that bump so loud every car near them vibrates in a 1/4 mile radius LOL

Did you make that? Or could I still get something like that wookie.

WTF! happened to the thread? Can we get some ####ing moderation in here@!!!?

Wookie, do u know how much that ended up weighing/costing in the end. I saw in the other thread some guy made box 50/50 wood/fiberglass to save on weight.

hmmm some ghetto systems 2 15's sealed is hardly efficient. it all depends how much you want to spend and what you are trying to get out of the system. a sealed box will weigh less then a slot ported box but is less efficient and takes more power to get as loud. your best bet is to make a 2-2.5cu^ft ported box using a flared port. kenwood makes a good subwoofer for about $70 that is really efficient and xmax cant be beat for the price. xmax = one way excursion. higher the xmax means the more air it will push. a single 12 in a hatchback sounds really good. remember it is better to overpower a subwoofer with clean unclipped power then underpowering a subwoofer and cranking the gains. tune the box to about 38hz for a good frequency response. if you need help designing a box/ looking for supplies im your guy. i may be a noob on this forum but when it comes to car audio i know my stuff. stevemeadedesigns.com has alot of great information and other people that would be more then happy to help you. this the kenwood sub i was talking about

its possible to remove the hump in 1st gen's?

Very good advice right here

Yeah just take the spare tire out

LOL i thought that was built in there didnt think to see if it came off. im doing 2 6.5" subwoofers in the back of my talon. i dont plan on doing anything big with mine i dont want to take up alot of space and add alot of weight. doing 6.5" focal components fiberglassed into the doors, i probably wont put rear speakers in it, better staging. my last competition vehicles where 92 blazer six 12" on 5k, 92 cavy four 15", 95 talon two 15's. will be posting build log once i get to the stereo in my 91 tsi.

Thanks for passing that on colt.

The reviews on that new stuff are really bad though. If I could find a tube like you posted I'd be on it.

I'm thinking about a bazooka tube for now, but I haven't heard one before.

You'd probably want to look for a old school boom tube, all the newer ones I have heard are garbage.

last week I installed on of these 8" shallow depth subwoofer
Amazon.com: JBL GTO804 Reduced Depth 8-Inch Subwoofer: Car Electronics
in one of these little "truck" sub boxes.
Amazon.com: New Single Car Truck Wedge Black Subwoofer Box Sealed Enclosure for 8" Woofer 8F: Car Electronics

it is probably the lightest set up you can get.
I don't like "boom" and hate to annoy people in other cars, I just wanted a little umph to fill in the bottom end and this little sucker does the trick. I am pretty happy with it.
If you wanted more "boom" two of them or the 10" version would probably do the trick.

My buddy's talon had 2 Memphis audio 12" subs with a 500 watt Memphis Power Reference amp. He had a Sony head unt and it sounded awesome. The song head unit was one with an programmable equalizer in it. For being a ported box the entire setup took up pretty much the whole trunk but didn't weigh a lot.

I found a basslink 2 locally on CL and a reg. basslink.

I'd rather have the 2, but we will see if not I'm thinking bazooka.
