All "my car won't start" discussion threads are merged HERE. We've basically made it easier for those who insist upon not searching by grouping together all threads from those with similar issues so you can just scroll through and see some possible solutions. To search for info within this thread, use the "Search This Thread" feature in the black bar about 3" above what you're reading right now.

Could be anything from a loose battery terminal to internal engine damage, and literally everything in between which may involve the electrical, fuel, and ignition system...possibly even something that you screwed up while working on the car yourself. While it's unlikely we're going to diagnose and solve your problem over the internet, feel free to discuss any possible solutions.

I live in Canada and right now its not very warm out, about -30c
my car does not have a block heater too keep it warm.

I tryed to start my car this morning and it wouldent start, ive had this problem before but this time, the car doesnt crank at all it just makes a sound that sounds like an electric drill.

Whats wrong.

Thanks

i brought the guy my whole ecu, he reflashed my old chip that came with the car when i bought it, where would the ignition relay be exactly? i did look at the fuse, it was fine,

Well it seems all that can wait, but i'll need cam and crank sensors, and the main engine wiring harness. I'm in southwest ohio, anyone know of a good yard to find that harness? Apparently it can't be bought so i'll have to yank one from a junked one. Keep in mind this is for the gst, i'm selling the rs.

We replaced the ASD relay with a part from AutoZone that said it fit my car, and after that the car would at least start but not run for more than a few seconds. After that we knew it was an ASD relay issue. Just to be sure it was the right part, we bought another ASD relay from Oreilly's and the car started right up and has been running fine....... so pissed and so happy at the same time, we spent $500 replacing parts (ECU and others) and it ended up being a $4 fix. We even tested the relays and they tested fine which is why we didn't replace them in the first place. Mechanic told us it needed a new ECU, but when a new ECU did nothing we started looking at everything again. Thanks sooo much everyone!

That's so cool to hear!

I was trying to help someone with the same issues as yours a while ago and I found a bunch of info/incidences about that particular relay. Turns out, it didn't help their problem so I wasn't sure if the hype about the ASD relay was real. So thanks for returning the results here and I will keep the ASD relay in mind then :thumb:

Hey guys and gals,

I am having a problem with my 1997 GS-T. I recently did a transmission swap and I plugged everything back in and now the car will not start. When the key is turned I can hear the fuel pump engage but the car will not crank. I tried replacing the battery and starter already. I am stumped on this as I think it is an electrical problem and I am not a very good electrician. :p
If anyone has ever had this problem or has any insight that can help me it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

I checked my grounds once but I will recheck then check a 3rd time. The car started before the tranny swap which is why this is confusing me..

Do you have dsm link? If you have link you can check to make sure your coolant temp sensor is reading the right temp. If its not hooked up or hooked up wrong, it will read -40* and that will cause it to just crank and crank! Check the plug and make sure its pluged in all the way and it dont have any broken wires!

did you check the basics?

Does it actually have spark?
pull a wire, stick a screw driver in there, and rest it on any metal surface, turn off the lights in the garage, and watch for the arc.

Is it actually receiving fuel?
Pull the feed line for the fuel rail, and stick the end into a container, crank it over ( do not do this at the same time as checking for Spark)

Post back if those two things are present.

The car is a 5 speed and the car will not turn over or budge whatsoever it turns by hand just will not do anything when the key is turned.

The car has fuel and I have not checked for spark yet I will do so when I am done with work.

Your first post said it would turn over??

I meant won't i went back through and corrected a few things and guess forgot to put won't crank over my bad.

Alright, since I do not have much time to spend working on my car everyday, school then work is there anything else I should check for if that is not the problem?

Well if your starter isn't kicking on, it has to be something in that nature, like starter silonoid wire, starter ground or power wire, starter relay or fuse. Can you hear any clicking on the starter while trying to turn it over? I would check those things first!

I don't hear anything from the starter. When me and my brother manually tried to start the starter all we heard was like a grinding/clicking noise coming from it.

Make sure the wire giving the signal to your starter is connected (on the back of the starter).

Make sure you have ground.

Make sure your + is hooked up tightly.

There is also another sub-harness clip that you need to make sure is connected (otherwise the starter will not turn over). If you don't hear anything it's because your starter isn't turning over.

Did you check that the clutch start switch located at the base of the clutch pedal is being activated when the clutch is pressed in? I had a similar situation a few years ago when returning to my car after work. The car started in the morning, but would not in the afternoon. The starter did not turn over, no clicking or other noises. It turned out to be the start switch.

Not sure if it's the same on your model year, but on my '90 it was a normally closed switch and simply disconnecting it from the wiring harness effectively fixed the problem. However, with it disconnected, I'm now able to start the car without having to press in the clutch pedal. So now I have to be careful that the transmission is in neutral when starting or the car will lurch forward during start up. Not a big deal once you get used to it. Hope you get it fixed soon. Good luck.

My clutch start switch has already been disengaged.

Time, what other subharness clip are you talking about I will check that and see if its is all good.

Thanks for all your help guys if you have more suggestions let me know I'll try anything to get my car started again.

check for power at the starter and jump the starter, if it doesnt do anything pull it out and have it tested at autozone or somewhere to verfy its good and go from there.

I have had it tested at autozone and my old starter was bad but then I put a new working one with the same result so I assumed that the issue wasn't just the starter.

Hey everybody my car sat for 2 days and wont start so i was gonna start by replacing sensors that could keep it from starting.

all it does as of now is just crank over.

if anyone could just put a list or link to the most known sensor to go out to the least would be nice thank you.
