So i bought my first car with a turbo yesterday. I can see why everyone loves boost so much =] But i dont want to do a bunch of crazy stuff, what are some mods i can do for better performance besides the obvious cold air intake and exhaust. I tried uploading pics but its not working so here is a link of pics if anyone cares to see it.

Pray... Lol jk

Do the maintenance. Check out Dsmtuners maintence guide, before you go any further.

You're about to piss a lot of people off by asking "what mods".

Top left corner. Click on "upgrade paths" under tech. And there are no cold air intakes for our cars (unless you do some custom work on your car).

As for first mods, maintenance ;)

Well maintenance it is LOL

Good choice. Follow the maintence guide. And when your testing, replacing, timing, and other assorted mainten ce is finished. Come back and start looking at everyones mods to get an idea, as well as follow the appropriate upgrade path. Your set. Remember you get what you pay for, and cheaping out on your DSM means your dsm might crap out on you

Everything everyone has told is true. The only thing I would do first after maintenance is I would get a turbo timer.

Screw the turbo timer-costs money.

Just let it idle after a drive for a minute to let the oil cool the bearings down.

First thing is pay for it, and drive carefully and follow basic maintenance procedures. I got my Laser 4yrs ago, did the belt maintenance, new brakes, ECU and tires and been a sweet ride since.

Use synthetic oils with NAPA GOLD 1381 filters.

Don't get boost happy driving around town right before you park your car and you should be fine without a turbo timer.
As for first mods, make sure the car is running in it's tip top form before you go changing ANYTHING. I would firstly install an aftermarket boost gauge and maybe a water temp gauge so you know how much you're actually boosting and how warm/cool your engine is at all times. These two are of vital important to the life of your dsm. Next I'd go with making it more of a personalized ride that fits you. Want leather seats? Get them. Want a nice stereo or an alarm system? Rims? Keyless entry yada yada. Making power can turn into making problems real fast if you don't know what you're doing, or WHERE to start making power first so you don't create problems for the rest of your setup

Forsure maintnence first especially with these cars if you do it they wont leave you on the side of the road after that first thing i would do is get a wideband and a boost controller then follow the free mods in the upgrade paths to get a little more umph out of your 1g!

First - is anything done to your car? hard to find one that hasn't had some mods.
Second - is is sound? smoking? if not...

while I agree with maintenance, everyone wants to do something. Want cheap fun and a conversation peice that is kind of a waste of money? get a turbo timer and A/F guage (narrow band).
Want to spend a few bucks to have fun? K&N filter and 3" turbo back exhaust. Then do maintenance, then do boost gauge and controller.

Hey stop bashing on the turbo timers, it looks cool to walk away from a running car LOL :p

Don't get a boost controller yet. I would say gauges (boost, oil pressure, and wideband). Then intake, exhaust, and the most useful, dsmlink ;)

Just got mine. Allready done t-belt, plugs, wires, slim fans (since it only had one fan put on there in a hack job fashion), Valve cover gasket, and cam seals.

I need to put on a new thermostat housing gasket and back flush the radiator but after that I am planning on moving to suspension, then brakes, then the motor go fast stuff.

Maintenance first becuase you can't go fast if your car is broken. First things is as much as it sucks don't exspect alot without a tune. Save up for ecmlink. Basic first mods are of always exhaust and intake. Don't worry about anything else until those are done. Once those are done the sky is the limit. Have fun.:hellyeah:
