I have a 92 tsi with a locking rear differential and idk the details of the tranny and rear end but it has a bunch of suspension including poly urethane mounts coil overs etc. Theres alot of clanking and grinding while coasting and de acclerating in gear and sometimes when taking off from a stop. Also makes a noise like a jeep with loud tires when just letting off the gas in 5th on the highway. The cars not very daily drivable the way it sits. It seems to shift fine other than the noises. Runs fine etc. this is my first dsm so idk if its typical or this is an old car thing? Let me know thanks.

As for the 5th gear jeep thing, mine does that too, its the rear end howling. It doesnt mean the rear end is bad, it could just be the awd depending on what 5th gear highway speeds you are at. Mine does that past 70mph. The grinding idk about, never had that problem. Id change your rear end, t case, and tranny fluid

As much as a hassel as it is, id unbolt the trans to make sure both front and back dowels are in. My last dude forgot to put my rear dowel in and it clunked for about 5 minutes, then rippedthe trans from the block to the point where i needed a new block and bell housing

That was my center differential doing that noise. A long time ago though. May wanna check your u joints or motor mounts. If its a center diff you will hear it turning wide de accell etc.

This issue must belong to us 1gs. Have the same issue. I filled my tcase with fluid after finding it was almost bone dry and the noise did seem to mellow some but not disappear. I have a new 4bolt swap ready to go in so I could let ya know if that fixes it
