Kevin, definatley a fan of the truck. I'd love to find one already swapped. heres an interesting question for you on it. do you think with a 2.3 or 2.4 and a small turbo could the truck do any towing? I know it sounds really crazy I just think it would be cool to see a mightymax towing a dsm with a tow bar. I know it would be easier to find a mitsubishi fuso with a rollback and just tow it normally but its just one of those wacky ideas in my head.

Back on topic though- If I sell my intake manifold i may consider swapping to a 14b with evo3 housing this season to try things out. I know i mentioned this lightly before but damn I miss that little turbo. I also just helped my friends pick up a galant vr4 today. number 423/2000 from Perth Amboy NJ. Its 14b powered and I'm helping him out with it. Hes gonna try to get it into the 13's... Shouldnt be hard. Its got all the supporting mods. Its just heavy.

Where are all the 14b contenders for the 2012 drag racing season? Anyone make any passes this year yet? Come on, we need some motivation!

I will run mine this year for sure. Just getting it together and finishing up the weight reduction. Just about done. Will run mine before April 28th for sure. Because after that I will be flying to Tokyo and will be away from the car for who knows how long. That is why I have been making a hard push this last month or so. Just shooting to do better than my previous 12.1. So in a couple weeks hopefully will have some times up. Keep your fingers crossed. :hellyeah:

Ill be hitting the track this friday, but sorry guys, I was just too greedy and took the 14b off my running DSM. If I get kicked out hardcore, maybe I'll put the 14b on.

Awesome! Let me know and I will at least go to watch. I just pulled my car down today for some work, I have to ship a part off and it wont run again until I get it back. I'm hoping for a quick turn around so we can run our 14b's together again!

The drag strip just made some new rule about no street tires because they were tearing up the track. I don't know if that is in effect or only on certain days. I'll try to find out for you.

EDIT - Ok, it looks like the street tire thing has been resolved with a new burnout procedure, rather then banning all street tires as it initially sounded. Here is the thread about it: http://www.southwestdrags.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16816

Thanks for the update. That would have sucked putting all the work into the car and not even being able to run when I got there. Thats funny, the new burnout procedure is the same burnout procedure I have employed since the 90's. Drive around the burnout box. Prestaged and waiting for the guy in the LS1 next to me to finish his 2 minute burnout. Funny how many looks and questions I always got for doing that. Now its a rule, go figure.

Nate, good lord you got alot going on there. I suspect you are going to have to play the "ignorant card" after your first pass. "I did not know it would be this fast!"

Might have to throw so coolant in while your at it. That upper radiator hose is sucked out like a hooker in clear high heels.

Same here. When I was on street tires I would role around the water and pre stage and wait. The problem was mainly the Mustang owners (and many others) that would create a smoke show on street tires before running a 15.3 or so. When they first made the rule the posted on the forum and on their facebook, "No radial tires, only slicks. Period.". This caused a lot of panic from a lot of guys with drag radials (myself included). Communication from the track ins't the best to say the least. :ohdamn:

I've thought about that too. The main problem with my/Kait's truck is the unlocked torque converter, it would make a ton of heat. A lock up trans or a 5 speed would probably be able to do it.

Heres a wrench in the ole works... i searched this thread, read the first couple posts and didnt see any mention of this. To possibly correct the first post, i have to say that i thought Al Blaha was the one who pushed the 14b hard before Hallman, and then came a contest between them.

Now, discuss :)

By the time I entered national DSM scene, late 95/early 96, they were already running 20G's. So this must have been much earlier. But I suppose, most people modding/racing their DSMs in 90/91 were setting 14b records :)

I said, "the first one to gain notoriety" as in Marc was featured in Turbo Magazine with some focus on being the quickest stock turbo.

Now, resume initial discussion :)

By the time i got mine in early 98 and hit the Talon Digest very few were running 2G MAF's or the Blaha mod, both of which were waaaay out of my price range, so i ported my own MAF like Blaha and it worked fine.

Ok, notoriety 'outside the DSM community', gotcha :) Never saw that article though. Its sad that these cars never got put into movies or had a lot of press exposure. Out of all the movies ive seen, ive only seen one 1G and one 2G. In Fled near the end when they are at the soccer game a 90-91 N/T Laser drives by and i dont remember what movie i saw the 2G in, maybe The Forgotten with Julianne Moore.

How about the fast and the furious? Pretty sure he was in a 2g to start the movie.

Well, getting us back on track, I have an update. Finally finished the weight reduction on my Talon today. Now I just need to put it back together. Still running all sheetmetal. So when she is back together the car will still look fairly stock. Just need to get it weighed. So if all works out, will get it out to the track next weekend or the following to get some shakedowns and start tuning. I did have to switch out springs, the old ones were stiff and for the amount of weight removed, the car was ridicously hard.

Pic from today.

Springs do not really cause "hard ride" (dampers do), especially when it come to "weight reduction" amount of weight change. What spring rate springs did you have and what reate are you looking to use?

Leon,
The Springs I had in the car at full weight for roadcourse were Front 12kg/ 671 lbs Rear 8kg/ 448 lbs. Already crazy stiff, but with the dampers at their softest setting I had some suspension travel and some of the harshness was absorbed. But now with the car gutted it was in the sky and the suspension felt like the dampers were on the hardest setting. So I put the additional set of springs I had fo my Teins, Front 9kg/504 lbs Rear 7kg/392 lbs. Maybe it is just psychological, but it feels softer. I do have camber plates, and pillow ball uppers.
After all these years the 12kilo springs had no ill effect on my plates. I know you mentioned one time that you had some stiff springs that had bent your camber plates.

jose

**Update**
Got the car together and weighed. Well, to begin the car was at 2740 and that was the weight when I did my 12.1 run. The car just weighed in at 2430. So she has lost 310 pounds. Should be could for some ET.

The stiffest I ever used on my car was around 600 lbs/in (I never damaged camber plates), but I have tried Fedja's 1000 lbs/in Springs with Penske shocks and they felt softer! It is all about dampers! :)

Did you also change your dampers when you went to softer springs?

Leon, my bad. I must have misunderstood your message you sent me some years back. Because when I got my Type HA originally you had commented on my stiff spring setup. So I was just throwing out there that after 9 years or so with 12kg/671lbs springs, the suspension held up nicely.

Another point, my Tein camber plates bent slightly from too much force on them. This was when I still had 350lbs springs. It is not a big deal, but noticeable when I have struts out of the car. I hate to imagine what 600-650lbs springs can do those plates.

As far as the dampers I left them the same. Just swapped out springs and put in new bump stops. I had contemplated a fresh rebuild, but when I pulled the suspension out it seemed still in good order.

I am still amazed how much extra the drivetrain makes the AWD weigh over the FWD!

Can you go into a little more detail on what was done as far as weight savings, ArcticTsi? That's a substantial difference!

Sure thing. One thing I want to note is that I still have all my autoX/Roadcourse goodies which if I skimped on or removed would drop the car weight even more. I have large one piece rotors all around, larger calipers, Front & Rear Strut tower bars, Oversized Front and Rear Sway bars, and 18 x 8 wheels.

Also if I went with a fiber hatch and fiber hood, there would be good weight savings there too. May still go that route in the future. Just for the time being trying to keep the cars outward appearance looking fairly stock.

Very nice! Once my car is back up and running and in current race trim, it should clock in a bit under 2100lb right now. Some quick things still left to work on are the Lexan door windows, driver window motor and track, completely gut the passenger door (including crash bar) and the crash bar on the driver side. I cut the door similar to Arctic on the driver side, but left just the points where the track and motor attach. I also pulled the wiring, but left the plug to the window motor with about 2" of wire and stripped the ends. If I need to let the window up or down, I just run jumper cables to the wires. Kind of ghetto, but it works perfect.

All the weight savings mentioned above are the "easy" things I can do in my garage. I could still do fiberglass hatch/hood with lexan, aluminum floor and a few other ideas I am contemplating!

I remember reading some where that there are 2 different 14b's (compressor covers are stamped 01 and 03), one of them has a right handed turbine shaft (the other has a left hand threaded shaft), that could lead to the nut coming off and the compressor wheel being chewed up. Anyone remember which was which? I can't remember which thread I saw it in, but when I buy a 14b I don't want to get the wrong one!

This one is off a '91 and is right hand threaded. I made sure to use a good amount of red loctite on it and 100 in/lbs
