Hello fellow DSMer's I have a issue and was wondering if anyone has heard this noise coming from there engine while running. It starts when the car begins to warm up, it stops if I pull the dipstick out then starts again when I put the dipstick back in. I posted the youtube video address if someone here could please view and tell me what you think I would appreciate it. Bad oil pump, spun bearing ???? I know its none of the the pulley's or water pump it coming from the inside. If you can't make it our I'll try to get another video up. Thank you!

I can't make it out, but if the noise only happens when the dipstick is in, then I would say it's the dipstick..

:confused:I don't understand how a bad oil pump would make that sound and why would you pulling the dipstick affect it.

Im as lost as you are. Maybe try a few tests such as checking how much crankcase pressure you have or something.

Goodluck

I was just gonna say that sounds like a crankcase pressure issue. Check your PCV valve.

Myabe the crank counter weight is hitting the dipstick?

I think BogusSVO is on to something here. This would cause a noise which would have a bit of an echo to it like that ringing you are hearing in the video. I would try to modify or bend the dipstick tube a little differently. If you have an extra cut one shorter and then put it in (thought it won't be good for much anymore).

Have you installed an aftermarket windage tray or girdle?

I have heard simular sounds in a SBC, that is missing the lower halve of the dip stick tube that directs the dipstic to the proper place in the oil pan

I had a ringing inside cylinder #2 after a rebuild by SlowBoy Racing. Turns out, Mike Huml dropped his cell-phone in there right before they put the head back on. Pretty pathetic, eh?

ps. remind me what day it is again....

Brand new pcv valve but I checked it anyways and its still good. Thank you for the response

No aftermarket windage tray or girdle. Its just a stock 6 bolt with about 80k miles on it.

I don't think its the hitting the dipstick. It still makes the noise for about half a sec. after I remove the dipstick. I don't take the dipstick all the way out, but only just enough to release the vacuum pressure inside crankcase and that's when the ringing noise stops. Then about a half a sec. after putting the dipstick back in where it seals back up the noise starts up again. I will double check though, and try bending it a little to see if it helps.

Thank you all for responses I greatly appreciate it.:thumb:

My idea :
6 bolt bloc and your dipstick look a 2G.
Maybe a lenght difference ?

I know someone was going to bring the 2g dipstick up. But I know that the 2g dipstick isn't the problem because it was doing the same thing with the 1g regular dipstick in. but good eye, and thank you for the response.

I just wanted to say thank you for all the replies and helpfull hints. Unfortuneatly I still havn't quite figured it out yet. I'm still open to all that want to make more suggestions, but I'm literally stumped. I guess I'll just keep driving it till what ever it is gets worse and finnally breaks. Hopefully I'll have a new rebuilt engine to go in by then and then I can tear it apart and really see what was going on. I'll defiantly keep everyone posted when I figure out whats going on. :thumb:
