Very sad. Yes he probably had internal bleeding, and there may have been a pre-existing condition that contributed. The car went airborn and so perhaps there was a large impact to the bottom of the car that you can't visualize. A high-g impact can lead to an aortic aneurysm, and the guy could walk some distance before he succumbed to it.
EDIT: I would also say that one should not assume he was fleeing the scene. He could have been in shock and in extreme pain, and was not making rational decisions at that point.
This. A guy I went to school with was hit head on by a drunk driver, and was sitting up talking to the 1st responders when his aorta pulled away from his heart, he collapsed and died on the spot.
