Kay, so i've been looking for a awd halfshaft for my fwd 1990 talon tsi, and i found a guy selling one for 70 bucks, shipped. I'm a total newbie at this/no experience, but here's a pic of it... it looks pretty ragged, but he says the joints are good. What do you think?

That's not too bad of a price if the bearing in the carrier is still good.

ok... does it matter what year 1g it came out of? i heard that at a certain year (1992?) the axle size changes...? is that right?

Im getting my drivers side half shaft for my 92 Talon AWD manual ABS new from O'rielly's at 69.99 with a limited lifetime warrenty. I'd buy used at 1/2 or maybe 2/3 the price of a new.

70 bucks isn't a terrible price, but I'd be looking to pay more around 40 - 50 used

This shaft from Oreilly doesn't include the intermediate shaft though.

I got my intermediate shaft used for $50 but it didnt include the axle (I went with the auto zone axle with a lifetime warranty which ironically snapped at the drag strip just 2 days ago). So $70 isn't a bad deal for the intermediate shaft and the axle.

Simple answer, no it does not matter what year 1g the AWD intermediate shaft came out, it will fit your 1990 FWD.

Complex answer, The 1990-1999 AWD intermediate shafts (with the exception of the 1997-1999's which would also require the use of the corresponding a/c bracket) are compatible with the differential found in 1990-late 1992 FWD DSM's. In late 1992 the FWD's got larger axles with a different spline count and therefore can't use the AWD intermediate shaft unless they also change the differential.

Its whole assembly from hub to tranny. Had reman for 10 less but had a 50 core charge.

Can find them on ebay as well for same price but only a 1year warrenty.

Sweet. Thanks for the help. I did a six bolt engine swap this summer from a 1990 into a 1994, so I assume that I kept the 1990 axles, but believe it or not, I can't quite remember. But, with that information, I guess I can throw an intermediate shaft and corresponding axle into my car, unless the swap from a 90tsi into a 94 n/t has anymore issues with the setup.

Hmm...ive had offers of 125-150 for both my 1g and 2g half shafts, without the axle. Maybe i should let them go!!!!

i will advice to go for a new one, it may cost a little more, but you can be sure that it is gona last, bcause the one in the pic is all rusty... used parts are great when you are totaly sure of what u buy, but if u have to ask i will advice to get a new one
