Ok I have heard some things. But my question is when you install new piston rings will you have low compression at first until the rings seat? I have heard that you will have low compression until the new rings seat is that true? And how long does it take for the rings to seat?

That all depends on how well the cylinders were honed. Did you hone the block at home with a drill? Or did you have a machine shop hone it?

How long will it take is also depend on how you break the engine in

What kind of rings did you use? steel? chrome-molly? chrome?

They are steel rings i believe, they are from ITM. And was honed by machine shop. Will u sometimes get low compression until rings seat though? Or is it supposed to be normal compression right away?

They should be seated in about 500-1000 miles if you break in the engine properly and do not glaze the cylinders

how did you drive it after you installed the rings and before you did the compression test? Did you let it idle a lot? did you take it for a slight pull and let the motor slow you down by keeping it in gear? (keeping lots of vaccuum)

Uh oh i used the words Vaccuum and piston seating in the same post. *Covers head*

I ran the car for like 3 minutes at idle but did not drive yet because i wanted to check to see if there were any leaks yet. Then i found a leak in the oil return line and fixed that so i will be starting it up and driving today. When i did do the compression check i got 75 on all cylinders. So u think breaking it in should bring it up?

Yes, go break that thing in. Don't go crazy on the boost, but do a half-way-decent pull and let off the gas with out putting it in neutral. do this a few times and go check the compression again (dont do the test with the engine cold) If you have low numbers still, go back out and do a couple more, come back check again. and if it doesnt have at least 130-140 across the board after 50-100 miles I'd say you might be pullin her back out to reset the rings at the least.

don't forget to use conventional oil and not synthetic on breakins. and to change it twice within a few hundred miles.

AHH echo beat me to it!!

Thanks for the replies and thanks for telling me about the break in oik what kind of oil you recommend for break in? And those compression numbers at 75 for all 4 cylinders normal for just putting fresh new rings in with no break in yet?

If the engine was really at 75 psi it would not run or start.

Try a diffrent gauge

Cheap regular oil 5/30 or 10/30 oil will be fine, use a decent oil filter
