I was wondering what the crank walk is? I have a 98 eclipse gst with 140k miles, and is the 7 bolt instead of the 6. Is there anything i can replace to prevent the block from exploding like in this video?

Ricer Destroys His Engine - YouTube

Also since i have a 140k i would like to know other parts i should just replace to keep my engine running nice and efficient. This is one of my favorite cars of all time so i wouldn't mind dropping around 2 grand (for the time being) to restore it. Anyway thanks for your time and i cant wait to start working on my dsm :thumb:

Ah crankwalk... It is basically where your crank moves up and down in its journals causing engine failure. Its also not a very common problem and with the miles you have on your car, crankwalk should not be an issue. Its just way way overplayed as an issue. Oh and to prevent your block from exploding, take good care of your engine. perform all scheduled maintenance. And when it comes time to modify, search, research, educate yourself (if have not already haha) find a good reputible tuner when it comes time for that. Use the correct parts. Always make sure you have the correct amount of oil in your engine, all that basic stuff.

LOL. That video....

As long as you take care of your car and are smart with it, you'll be ok. Chances are the car blew up in that video due to a lack of tuning and poor modifications.

I.e. you cannot just turn up the boost and expect it to hold together. :)

More simple then what I said but exactly this:thumb:

I bought it used though with 140k, i just got the car. I thought it would be a good time to joined the threads after i got it ha so i dont know how well the last owner kept up with it. There isnt much rust in the bay so it isnt a mess but i bought it from a lot so i dont know if a kid drove it or someone older. Runs ok and the clutch doesn't stick but i have only had it for a week.

Yup, and I agree with you on the crankwalk thing... it's been was over rated. Everyone likes to blame their mistakes on something other than themselves, so that's why that got so blown out or proportion.

As also mentioned... +1 on doing the regular maintainece... i.e. tune up, check the condition of the belts, hoses, and condition of the fluids, ect. Wouldn't worry too much if it is running fine now.

I have also heard the ECU goes out in these cars as well, have you guys encountered any problems with this?

They do but its more prominent in the 1G's... knock on wood mines still kickin! Ya if its runnin fine right now just use common sense over the next month and if somethin is gonna give you should know. Im gonna assume its in fairly stock condition then? if so it probably is just fine.

LOL at the video

I have only had problems with the Ecu with the 1g's and that's because the printed circuit boards for the ECUs on these cars contain electrolytic capacitors that leak when they age. The capacitor leaks are corrosive, and will eat through the circuit board, eventually resulting in total failure of the ECU, and obviously a car that doesn't run.

Correct me if i'm wrong guy's!! But i doubt you will have a problem with your 2g ecu unless there's like water damage or a electrical problem. Do your research tho, best way is to see others experiences and what they go though so you know how to prepare yourself if that problem arises for you.

Right now I'm contemplating on picking up a 97 GS-T with 124k on it. Just so afraid of this "crankwalk", not sure if I should be concerned about it because of people blowing this out of proportion or if I should actually just not buy the car

Don't think about it. Simple as that. It's blown way out of proportion. Just remember every motor is prone to it.

2g ECU's can suffer from capacitor leakage as well. That's why ECM Tuning replaces all the caps on the board before sending them back out to customers. A broken Idle Speed Controller can also burn up the ECU if the computer is trying to constantly control a broken idle motor.

I agree that crankwalk is well over rated. 6-bolts can walk too. There's no proven way to prevent it, stop it, or even fix it once it happens. But maintenance and proper maching (if your building an engine) will go miles when it comes to preventing things such as crankwalk.

If the motor has made it to 124k without walking then it most likely wont walk;). Crankwalk is way overrated plus any motor can walk not just dsm's. As 95talongirl stated is mostly peoples mistakes that lead to engine failure either by inexperience or abusing it without proper mods, tuning, and maintenance:nono:.

To the OP, you have a 98 and 2k to spend on it, hell just do a stock rebuild to get the peace of mind you seek. 98-99 came with the better design split thrust bearing:hellyeah: which is less prone to walk like a 6 bolt. I actually swapped my motor 3 years ago to a 6 bolt to keep it from "walking" only to have it walk 4 months later:cry: so dont get all into that hype about only 7 bolts walking either.
