hey guys new to the forum. me and my wife bought a 1998 eclipse gs about a month ago. iv always been American muscle and have not really worked on these cars much even me being a technician. anyways i tryed searching this up but came up with nothing, maybe im not searching right. but anyways i have been looking at alot of options for these cars and have noticed that some have the transmission on the passenger side and some have them on the driver side (like mine) and im wondering what and why they are different? if this question has been asked before i apologize in advance!!!! i thought it was only the gst and gsx but i have seen the gs's with passenger side too. so can anyone help me out with what the differences are?

different engines. 420A, 4G63/4. I think the GS spider had a 4G64 which is engine drivers side, trans pass side. if yours is 420A it's engine pass side, trans drivers side.

yea mines a 420a. iv been thinking of putting a factory turbo engine in since they are plentiful around here cheap. plus iv heard these Chrysler 2.0's experience crank walk real bad. anyways thanks alot for clearing that up with me i was kind of confused!!

You can't put a 4G63 in a GS, and the 420a never crankwalked.

This is half correct. The European 2g NT actually has a 4g63 in it and ANY motor with a crank can experience enough wear to allow enough endplay the the crank which is what crank walk is.

are you saying i cant put a 4g63 in it at all? or without modification? you can do anything with willpower.

I know that man, but that doesn't apply on this side of the ocean. And yes I know that any crank can walk LOL, but 420a's certainly aren't known for it.

Sure you can do anything with enough fabrication, but 4G63 DSM's are everywhere so it's hard to see why someone would want to go through the trouble.

Well looking at your profile u have a gst and a 420a car correct.pop the the hood open on both cars and compare the following. Engine and trans mounts cromember mounts. The frames 420a cars are humped driver side gst gsx passenger side.Wirring totly diffrent. Suspension cossmber diffrent. Engine accesories routed diffrent.shifter cables and more.So can it be done yes, would u want to do it deepends if u want to since u could just buy a gsx or gst.

no only a 420a. when i was choosing the model of my car i accidentally chose gst instead of n/t. not trying to make a argument i was just asking if it was doable. i have no problems with turbo'n my 420a at all. just weighing my options. thanks for clarification.

Anything can be done, if you put your mind to it, so many custom cars out there, ive seen cars and thought would never work, at the shows ive been to. Things may not be a direct throw it in job, but the fun is thinking outside the box.

And after thinking about it. Lets say u have a gs and u were able to find a totled gsx or gst hit in the side or the rear. It would just be easier to to use the gs to repair the gst or gsx.and if the gsx gst were hit in the front, the damge would not warrent a swap to said gs.

pretty much what everyone else said, after you go through all the stuff you would need to do, to do the conversion you could have basically bought a stock gst tsi or gsx and still had the gs for a great daily driver from what I have heard about them.
