I own a 97 talon tsi awd with a 6bolt swap. I had some issues with the drivetrain and put the car on the back burner to deal with other priorities. At the last runing the engine was fine (only has 2k on the motor) Replaced most of the drive train including a rebuilt tranny from jacks. Now when I start it I get this terrible knocking/strange vibration sound at lower (<3000) rpms. I cant, for the life of me, figure out what the sound could be. Ive checked the timing belt cover, upper and lower, the cam cap bolt torque. Like I said the motor and head are brand new...2k on them, and they were fine before. Could the 10 month sit cause these issues? Heres a video of the sound (I replaced some vacuum lines and caps, so I know that there are leaks but Im more worried with this vibration.

almost sounds to me like it could be an exhaust leak or a loose motor mount. remember to check the basics out before you do the harder and more time consuming troubleshooting

I can't hear it very well cause my laptop speakers suck, but what i can hear it sounds like a regular low rpm misfire/stumble. Take care of those vac leaks first and see where that leads you.

After almost a year of sitting what did you do to prepare the car for its first start?

bump...any ideas? Thinking about dropping the oilpan and checking rod bearings

This sounds familiar, if you have the balance shafts still in (as i did...)

the sound sounds exactly the same as mine (thats my video....), and the balance shaft went, and if you keep doing that..as i did...youll screw up the oil pump and front case as well. Before i kept driving it ( to see if the noise would go away, or to figure out exactly what it was) it was very close to yours with the noise being more of a chatter and almost rod knock-ish, and i could tell it was robbing the car of power..ill try and find my thread to link to. That video was taken after the oil pump was screwed up so as you can see, oil was getting everywhere. (esp the belt...)

thats what i found when i went after just the problem...and just did the bse with leaving the front in place, and this next one is what i found once i actually pulled the engine and got into it....

balance shafts are eliminated and yes I did put threadlocker on and torque the flywheel bots

im still gonna say its a similar sound to what my oil pump was making after this happened/before it seized. if the car sat for that long, and the pump was new(er) and wasnt primed before starting that could have caused some issues...

Do you know what BSE kit was used?
