Hello dudes i need help/advise on which eclipse generation to get i'm young but im willing to learn anyway, it'll be my first dsm, my first stickshift lets just leave it at that. I don't mind how they both look i like them both but which car will be less trouble? less money to get started with? i know that if i get a 2g ill want to swap the engine with a 1g but i don't know where ill get the engine. i was going to get a 240sx but what stopped me was the engine swap. So im having second thoughts on the 2g. but yea thats about it, which g will be easier to get started with, experience and money wise. Thanks :)

Go with the First Generation Eclipse, theres more trouble with the Second Generation Eclipses, but Second Generation look better.

There both practicly the same for the most part.I would just search and narrow down the list and find what one is the best price and best taken care of no matter if its a 1g or a 2g sence you like them both.

The 1g is a better build car. The body has thicker metal (2g's dent way easier). The suspension is relatively trouble free (2g's have balljoint problems). The interior is a thousand times better quality on the 1g. Everything in the 2g will rattle and it just very cheaply made. Also the 1g's have a frame around the windows so they don't rattle like the 2g's. The seating position in the 1g is more comfortable also. The 2g is like a combination of a sports car and a sedan. In my opinion the seating position is horrible. IF you drive in the snow at all the 1g awd will go thru about anything you want. 2g's not so much.

I recently acquired a 2g I like both, 1g good for track but but my 2g is nice too. I like my 1g better, grandmas died so i have some land to work on them and acquire more projects, and cars. The 2g to me is ok, parts are hard to come by lately.

Buy what you like...There is no reason to swap out the 7 bolt Engine just because...If your engine goes bad...then you can choose if you want a 6 bolt or 7 bolt. I think your trying to look too far ahead. Get into a car that you can afford. Personally I try to find them with the least amount of mods as possible unless you are buying it from someone you know. Too many people get them and abuse them.

Go 1g especially since its obd1 with a obd 2 you have to connect to a Dyno to past inspection. Also 1g are older and according to your state you may be eligible for classic plates. (means you can drive around loud depending on state). Also the 1g was designed as a awd car better steel and it seems less rust than 2gs. I prefer 1g talons they seem to not rust as bad nor dent as easy.

In the end price should determine your choice.

In my state the car has to be 20 years old to get classic plates. But you also have to have another daily driver registered in your name in order to get the plates.

It is 10x's easier making a 96+ pass emissions. No check engine light = pass...So simple to make this happen vs your car being ran on a dyno with the tail pipe test...

Sorry forgot to add that then again what dsm driver don't have a second car it seems standard now a days.

I would say go with the 2g because you will most likely regret getting the 1g just because of its looks. If anything get the 2g and either get a GST or a GSX. I got a GS for my first car last year and i like it but i want more power. I'll have to deal with the GS for right now. SO get the 2g GSX or GST

If you want something with less trouble in general it doesn't matter what generation you get, just don't get a turbo version, thats where most maintenance comes it play so i would suggest a non-turbo, yea everyone is going to say blah blah turbo is better but i guarantee its a lot more expensive and more problems in the long run for your first..... besides you can always add a turbo when you want....

just throwOMG this out there if u get a 2g and want to put the 1g 6 bolt make sure its a 95 2g because its still obd1. u cant pass emmisions if u have an obd2 car with an obd1 engine. because they wont read anything when they plug the scan tool to the dlc and thats an automatic fail

Umm I don't think this really makes sense. You have to do the 6 bolt swap wiring and then it is fine. I can read the dlc's and I have a 6 bolt in my 97 GSX. It throws no codes but you have to make sure your wiring is right. If you really want you can swap a 6 bolt short block with a 2g head on to make things even easier.

i know here in CT u cant do it and pass emmisions. i know alot of ppl that have done it and the cant pass

I guess the OP will just have to find out what exactly he can get away with in his state as I am not sure how they stand towards the vehicle emissions.

My 95 was made in 1994 and it has OBD2...

The 2g's were not designed as AWD cars?

OP- I would suggest an early 1g such as a 90 or 91. They are bullet proof, really not that bad looking at all, fairly easy to work on, and are usually cheaper yet better kept. But overall you shouldn't turn down a 2g if you find one you like that's in good shape. They all have their quirks so there is no superior DSM over the others.

I would go with a 1ga all day. 1g are so much easier to work on in every way. dont get me wrong 2g are very nice too and easier to find clean ones but i would keep looking for that clean 1g.

Look around and buy what has been taken care of weather its a 1g or 2g
What he said. Now that DSMs are getting up there in age, this notion of what year, genration, etc is better is kind of overrated. It's true, each generation has its list of design features that give it an advantage over the other, but at the end of the day, when you're looking at a particular vehicle with a "For Sale" sign in some guy's driveway, the shape that particular car is in is MUCH more relevant than pretty much anything else. I mean, there are rust-bucket, shitty 1g's out there, there are rust-bucket, shitty 2g's out there, etc, etc. You have to focus on a particular vehicle, not so much the generation.

By the way, I'm on my 4th DSM (three previous 1g AWD's and my current 2g AWD) and I DIDN'T choose to get a 2g cause I couldn't find any 1g's. Just sayin'

A 1g will probably run less $$ al around and can be had cheap..
