So I messed up the flare on the hardline that feeds the fuel filter, trying to find out the best way to do this. I understand I need a ridgid pipe cutter and a double flare kit, but don't you need the entire hardline to be outside of the car to properly flare the end? So that you can use a vice grip?

I really don't want to remove the the entire hardline from the car...not if I'm not going to just replace the entire line, whitch they don't even make / sell.

Or is it practical to try to make a double flare inside the car? I have a nice empty engine bay, but space is still semi-tight

You don't necessarily need a 'Ridgid' brand line cutter, you can find line cutters at about any hardware store. Though for the flaring tool kit, I would recommend not going super cheap. When I did some double flaring I bought a cheap auto parts store band and the wing nuts on the bars that holds the line tight broke.

So that you can use a vice grip?

I think you meant vise. Personally i would just flare it while its on the car. With the engine bay empty it shouldn't be a problem.

Also here is a video that is pretty helpful if your new to the double flare Here

I think the hardline may be too bent / slightly crushed to work with. if so,.can I fabricate a new hardline since they don't sell them?

I'm going to try to fix it but I think its too bent. I'll upload pics later today, hopefully I can fix what I have, most nightmare of a mess ever though :(

Yes you can make your own your going to need a tube bender and some tube.; If you do buy extra tube so you can get the hang of how your bender works.

so I should be able to use one of the extra fittings that came with my fuel filter kit right? the fitting has to be just bigger than the pipe so it can slide through right? and so that the.flare ends up being bigger than the hole to keep the fitting on?

hold on I'll go ahead and take a pic of the fitting I have along with the hardline.

Why not just do something like swap to soft line. -6an from rear to front removes the worry of bent or kinked tubing.

Well I actually read that the factory hardlines are pretty reliable, and a better idea for long term /daily driver use compared to flexable braided hoses, unless you have the money to regularly replace the braided hoses. Here's some pics:

this is the open threaded side that would face up / attach to the filter.

this is the opposite side of the fitting on the hardline, to show the small space in between.

Can someone please help me with finding new ends for the fuel filter? I thought the red peice matched up with the end on the filter and it actually doesn't. I don't know how I mixed it up. I already flared the end, so I guess i'll have to re-flare, does anybody know if this fitting will work? Saying I can find a piece to make it connect to the filter.

That red fitting is for attaching your braided hose. You may need to just cut some off the hardline and attach braided hose; it would be pretty difficult to flare the line on a curve.

I got your PM, and I would show you in more detail what to do, but I would probably have to make a video or something, and I'm busy cooking dinner for my kid.

I appreciate the reply. Wouldn't I have to remove the new flare I just made to get the braided hose on to the fuel filter hardline? Like I was saying, some help on where to buy just the fittings would be awesome too. I got my fuel kit from PSI but I looked and I don't think they have just the fittings..I might just have to by another braided hose kit.

It's tough to tell what you need without seeing all of what you have. If you want to double flare the line, and screw it onto an -an fitting, then you need to slide on a sleeve and a tube nut before you flare the line.

Jeg's and Summit both sell -an fittings, and any local performance shop should have what you need on hand.

The stuff in this photo is as follows left to right: 1-Barbed hose connector with sleeve/nut, (not pictured is the hose that would go in between), 2-Another barbed hose connector with sleeve/nut, 3-Male/male an fitting, 4-sleeve, 5-tube nut.

The hardline would slide through the nut, then the sleeve from the left of the photo, and should be double flared between the male/male -an fitting, and the sleeve. Then slide the nut to the right and tighten it to the male/male -an fitting. Now you have an -an fitting on your hardline. Take that red nut/sleeve and slide it onto your braided hose. Put a drop of oil in the end of the hose, and slip the barbed fitting into your hose. Then slide tha red sleeve/nut up the hose, and screw it onto your barbed fitting. Now you have the female -an fitting on the end of your hose. That connects to the male -an fitting on your hardline.

Ps. The sleeve/nut is the half of part #1 that has the logo visible on it. Yours is red.

Mine are red too see:

Ps. Ps. In case you are wondering, I have since cleaned that big mess up.

EDIT: Let me correct myself: The nut/sleeve will only slide onto the braided hose up to a point where it bottoms out. Then you put the drop of oil in the end of the hose, and screw the barbed fitting into that.

Alright, this is the kit that I was talking about I bought from PSI, these would be all the fittings I have.

EXTREME PSI : Your #1 Source for In Stock Performance Parts

I checked jeggs ans summit and I'm not seeing anything...So just to confirm I should go ahead and cut the pipe again and re-flare with new fittings? Should I buy another one of those kits above ^^^

and on a side note, does anyone know what size the hardline actually is? The flaring tool says it's a 5/16 I think but all these websites are trying to sell 3/8 fittings....I just want to get this out of the way more than anything else! worst mistake ever!!!

You have a FPR install kit, that has nothing to do with the line from the tank to the engine. If you are talking about an FPR install, just slip the line over the return line and use a hose clamp. I just did that myself. As far as the tube sleeve and nut, you do not have those. You will need to order them from somewhere like jegs or summit or find a local speed shop with them. You will need to know what size line you have. If you are installing new feed line from your filter to the fuel rail, just cut the fuel line further down, and run slightly longer lines. There is a lot you can do really.

Here's a link to some tube sleeves; there's also a video on the page that shows how to work with some of the different fittings.

thanks again. I was confused earlier since you said the nut/sleeve on the left of the.pic when it looks like you were talking about the one in the far right. just looking for the nut now. EDIT- I think this is the piece I really need?

You're right, I did mean the far right. Sorry.

Yes the line is 5/16" or 8mm. You need 5-AN fittings, or use your original tube nut and that 6-AN adapter you linked to.

I sheared mine right off trying to get the fuel filter off, ended up running braided line from tank to rail from STM. Easy install.

it looks like you're talking about a fwd, I think the awd gas tanks are positioned differently. like I was saying, totally not sure if the gas tank shield needs to be removed, if it does I wouldn't. e able to get it back on since it's so rusted.

anyone know where the hardline fits to the pump? is it at the top of the pump?

The hardline connects to a short rubber hose that connects to the top of the fuel pump assembly. The gst and gsx are located in the same place, remove back seat, remove the plate covering the pump assembly and you will see where the hardline connects.

The first pic with the wrench is the line your hardline is attached to, the second shows the rubber line, it's about 8" to a foot long, the other end is connected to your hardline.
