You can, I know ETS has there car setup like that. I would search the aem forums. I heard you gotta setup diodes and relays to make aem capable of doing so on our trans. I prefer shifting my auto. Gives me a little bit of excitement.

You do have the digital roadsurge box.And it has done it more than once.

Did you talk to Tim? The owner of the roadsurge box?

Do you have his contact info? Its not on the website.

BTW- here is the video of the first pass where I rolled out with a 1.9 60ft and still went 7.2 which is my best 1/8 mile to date.

Duno if you need any auto parts but I know of a jy in the west palm area with a 2g auto gsx. The motor is gone but the drivetrain and rear end is still in tact along with some electrical components.

KABOOM! Damn, you can hear that screaming loud and clear. That is one hell of a dump... I bet you almost wound up tasting steering wheel when that happened. I'm suprised you didn't have an obvious secondary failure of the driveline.

That sucks man, I'm at work so I can't watch the video, but I know the feeling. I did a 2-3-2 shift in my manual a few years back. I don't know what it reved too put I'm guessing it was easily in the 11-12k range. The car ran fine for about 2 weeks before I started hearing a terrible knocking noise. I pulled the motor to find rod #4 bent.

Well the car shut off and hasn't been started again so Im not sure. I wouldn't doubt there being issues with the tranny after this happened twice.

Man that really sucks, I hope the damage is minimal. I was thinking about trying one of those road surge boxes a while ago, but eff that now! I've been using a hurst ratchet shifter with the gear selector wired up the Kiggly manumatic way. I also like having control of when I shift, makes it a little more fun. Plus it's so easy, just click the ratchet stick forward when the shift light comes on. :thumb:

Im new to the auto game..Do you have a link to one? I dont want to manually shift it though at the track

I use this shifter, got it used for like $70 on ebay:

Thanks for that. I don't want to shift the tranny unless I have to. First I would like to speak with Tim @ roadsurge to see if there is anything he can do to help fix the resetting problem.

Does anyone have his contact info??? The roadsurge website has no phone number.

Contact English Racing about getting the AEM to shift the auto for you. Jeff Bush's 1G drag car has been shifted by AEM for years now (tuned by Lucas English) and it works great!

Could it be a faulty power source? Ive never worked with one but coundnt that reset it?

Not really. It was getting power the entire time and so does the digital delay rpm switch. It whole setup is on the way to roadsurge to be checked over and make sure everything internally is ok. Im also having my default gear set to 3rd instead of 1st so if this happens again instead of the overrev it will just be a bad pass.

I looked over the motor and the bottom end is trashed. The thrust bearing is worn believe it or not so I guess my 6 bolt crankwalked LOL. The rod bearings were pretty chewed up as well. The rods and pistons still look brand new though. Im probably going to slap some new bearings in and put it back together. I work out of state for 6 months and leave the end of feb so I want to make some more passes before I leave. I have another block and crank that I will be putting together a high comp aluminum rod motor while Im gone.

I have a few 6 bolt blocks if you need one. ANY motor can walk! Now thats 2 6bolts I know of this month that have walked.

Thanks man I have a spare as well that Im going to be building while Im away. Im just gonna slap this motor back together with new bearings and hope for the best LOL.

It sucks this has happened! Because of this issue, all the new ones default to third gear on reset. You can also send in your old one and I can reprogram it to default to 3rd gear on reset as well.

This is the first time in 3 years this has happened that I have heard of with the digital version. The newest version comes with RPM downshift protection, 3rd gear default, and a lifetime warranty.

Once richard33's box has been tested and diagnosed, I will update this thread if that is ok with you richard33...

Thanks Tim! Hopefully we can get everything figured out.

For an update on things....

Problem 1. The box has been modified for an external display by someone other than me and 2 wires on the display were stray causing the display wires to ground out which caused the box to reset if jolted. Solution was to unsolder the wires that had the frays, remove them, then solder them back in place ensuring no fray wires had missed the hole.

Problem 2. When the circuit board was removed from the box for the external display mod, the upshift pull down resistor had solder removed from one of the legs probably from desolder braid. This would not cause a reset, but it could cause unwanted shifts due to a "floating" pin. Solution was to reheat, and solder again.

Problem 3. The amperage draw of the RPM switch, automotive relay, and the shift box all from the same source was less than 1A when all circuits were idle, but once a shift was activated, the amperage draw spiked to 3.6A and also caused about 6 volts feedback to ground when the relay from the RPM switch and the automotive relay activated. Solution for this is to run the RPM switch and the automotive relay on a separate power source than the shift box. The shift box was designed to run from the original TCU power source wires which come straight from the fuse box. Other items on the same power source can cause voltage drops below 8.8V which is the "brown-out" voltage of the shift box.

With the above problems fixed, I will be reprogramming the shift box to default to 3rd gear on reset, and installing Richard's setup in my car the same way he had it in his. I will be connecting to 2 different power sources as well.

Another update...

Went for a 150 mile road trip to a job site driving with Richard's setup installed in my car. Everything was good and the shifts were working perfectly. I did have one problem where a wire broke loose from a crimp connection on the external shifter setup, but I patched it up and it worked for the rest of the trip. The wire used is extremely small and easily broke so once I got home, I soldered a thicker wire to prevent future problems. I will go for another test drive tomorrow to ensure everything is working 100% and will be shipping it back out on Monday as long as everything goes well.

To those who are scared of using the roadsurge shift box because of this issue...
This problem did not happen because of the shift box itself. It was because the shift box was opened and modified from a previous owner. Some solder connections were not done properly for the external display mod as well as the power source the shift box was on was getting feedback from other components on the same circuit called flyback voltage. As stated above, to prevent further issues, all shift boxes are programmed to start in 3rd gear unless another gear is requested.
This was the first shift box ever sent back for any issue in over 3 years.

Thanks Tim! I completely agree with him that this was not an issue with his product but an issue with the previous owner modifying it incorrectly. I 100% feel confident using this shift box and will continue to. Tim has been awesome helping me out. I'm looking forward to getting the box back and the car up and running again so I can make some full 1/4mile passes.
