Hey guys I've looked around the forum for an answer to a balance shaft question I have. I was wondering if a BSE can be done with out pulling the engine (as I don't have the facility) or ripping it right down to say the block. Would it work to just pull the covers and oil pan?
Where can I get good kits from? and should I replace both oil and water pump even if their working good?

I know someone else will have these questions as well so I figured may as well bring the topic back up because some people probably wont try to look for the answers. As annoying as repeat topics are sometimes they need repeating (sorry for any annoyance this may cause) Hopefully some one replies.... I need to know ASAP

Thanks in advance!

Youve GOT to pull the motor, in order to get the around 13 inch long balance shafts out of the motor it needs pulled! Also there is a gear that needs removed off the oil pump that is a turd to remove.. Youll need new gaskets, oil pump, and oil filter housing. Also a good idea to buy a new timing kit. Thats just me.

If I were you FOR SURE replace the water pump and oil pump! Or when the oil pump goes bad youll have to pull the motor again..

RRE Has good BSE kits. Here is the site. RRE's Eclipse Engine Upgrades

k well I guess I cant do it then! LOL unless I start pulling them bit by bit and using bolt cutters to cut off chunks.:hmm: Thanks for the info guys, those questions were really bugging me. Looks like I'll postpone the BSE for awhile!

Taken from the VFAQ,almost half-way down the page...

"The engine must be dropped down to get the front balance shaft to clear the frame when you pull it from the engine. Place a floor jack under the front crossmember that runs along the front of the car. If possible, strap the jack to the crossmember with wire or duct tape, as the crossmember will shift and rotate once it is dropped from the frame. Remove the nuts at each end of the crossmember and lower it a little to pull the oilpump cover and rear balance shaft off of the engine (The rear balance shaft will come out with the cover). Lower the engine further until you can pull the front balance shaft out of the engine and clear the frame."

This is how I'm going to do mine in my Eclipse and my Colt. ilco187 posted that it was possible this way.

i thought you could jut use a sawzill and cut the balance shaft after taking the oil pan off and then just pull it out. maybe drop the engine a couple inches if you want. my friend did it this way, you just have to have a steady hand and be careful LOL

I feel it would be best to drop the motor and remove the shafts as a whole unit over cutting them out in small sections. I would be afraid of getting small metal bits all over the engine and possibly into places it should never be.

It is 100 times easier to install the block off bearings with the block out of the car also. It literally takes a few hours to pull the engine, it's not that hard to do.

When you pull the engine its a nice time to clean some stuff up while youre there, and a lot easier to pull the pump off, when you do your bse. Of course i did mine when i tore the engine apart for a rebuild.

It's also a alot easier to seal the pan. You won't have oil dripping on your rtv at it's drying.

Yeah save yourself the frustration and pull that mother. Ive pulled and installed a front case or two and even installed a crankshaft with the motor still in the car. It can be done but will take just as long to pull the motor as it would fighting it every step of the way.
