last night i went and picked up my newest project. a 96 eagle talon tsi. i was told it spun a rod bearing. well after i pressure washed it i decided to take a look. well i drained the oil and when i looked at my drain plug it had an afro!. i decided to go ahead and pull the pan and what i found was rod bearings, part of the piston, the shield that covers the crank, with a whole through it, then with a little wiggling the #2 piston rod came out as well. so heres my question. am i better off buying a used engine or rebuilding this one?

Depends on if you wanna take the same chance of have another engine issue down the road. Weigh out your pros and cons. Buying another used or building a motor that you can blue print.

How much is the seller asking?

Condition of the vehicle Overall?

If it's under $1500-$2000 buy it and swap a new motor :)

He already has the car, he said he already picked it up.

OT: I would go ahead and find a new block and start fresh. If the old block checks out good you can start putting together a spare block in the meantime.

+1
just take the old block to the machine shop but in the mean time swap in a 6 bolt

I've always been a fan of rebuilding. Saves money of the block you currently have is in good shape

You don't want to run a 95-97 block anyways. The 3 piece thrust washer set up in the 98 and 99 block wont crank walk.My frien made over 650 horse in a 99 block without issue. Or if you don't mind running the 1g electronics, you can use the 1g 7 bolt block too. Also,if you need,I have a never bored 1g 7 bolt block, but I'm in Florida.
