When I purchased my car it had really bad down pipe rust to where the thing actually fell apart in two. My mechanic was nice enough to patch it up with some steel tubing as a temp fix for while I collected to get a better one. The pipe also had much rust and holes near the manifold end.

So when I pop the hood open theres... this...

I had a pic of it up before but it wasn't as good as this one now. What is the black stuff? Could it have been the exhaust blackening my block up? Or is it an oil leak? Inside the vehicle my oil gauge tends to fluctuate up and down depending on how the car is used. I also do not see any spots on the floor after I left the my parking spot. It concerns me :/ Dip stick reads perfectly fine too.

At Idle my boost gauges read this

Why is it that I'm on vacuum? Should I be at 0? or is it good that I have vacuum?

Another concern I have is that while I had gas in my tank my light randomly came on. Since I bought the car I've used Techron fuel system cleaner (12 gallon one, bogo free at autozone) 3 times, each time with a compete fill up using super (93 @ mobil gas stations)

What could have attributed to this?

My A:R gauge usually goes back and forth while I'm driving. It is never stable, so it looks like a rainbow show on my dash, is that normal? and what does stoich mean? :/ Sorry for all the questions.

I remember seeing a video involving "Scott" from dsmtalk (I think) in which he hears a whining noise in his vehicle at low speed cruising (<30mph). It sounds like a medium to high pitch humming. He attributes it to a defective differential, could it be that mine is going?

Last but not least, DSM's rule :) and thanks in advance :):thumb:

The first pic is probably the manifold stud thats behind that rack is snapped off. Also could be valve cover or that little hole is a bleeder for oil.

The "black stuff" is oil. Your valve cover gasket is leaking. Vacuum at idle is normal. The fuel light could be a possible malfuction of the sender, or the fuel sloshing away from it.

And that A/F gauge shows absolutely nothing, it is narrow band and is basically a $40 light show.

Thanks for the prompt responses :)

As for the the manifold, do I need to have that shield over it? I think it looks suck :/ Any reason to leave it on there? Can I spray on degreaser to remove the black? And how difficult is it to replace the gasket?

Which A/F gauge is good? I want everything in here to be functional, I can do without the rainbow, Although the current gauge allows me to know when my car is fired up correctly from a cold start.

welcome to the myriad of problems that are dsm.

when at idle you will have vacuum until your turbo reaches boost. its good to have a gauge that shows vacuum. it will let you know if your engine is working properly.

PICTURE 1: Could be a bad cam seal. Is it also on the back of the head near the intake manni as well? That little hole is for the spark plug galley of the valve cover. It's to drain water, oil, and any other fluids that might be in that area to keep the spark plugs and wires clear of pooling liquids or chemicals. It looks like you have a bad exhaust leak right there by how the black oil'ish stuff is swept acrost that area.

PICTURE 2: Being in VAC at idle is normal, when your cruising down the road you will see VAC as well. That is suppose to be like that so your good there for a normal average of around 20. You will see +psi when your engine is under a load liek going up a hill, giving it a bit of throttle, ECT...

PICTURE 3: Have you had a diagnostic read put on your 2G? If you don't get a code then it's possibly a loose wire by the fuel tank, or a defective low fuel warning light sender unit. The low fuel sending unit is inside the fuel tank.

A/F RATIO GAUGE: A narrow band will do that. They tend to cycle all over the place and are not that great or accurate. A good WB is gonna run around $150-$200 but well worth having for future modifications, and to see what your car is doing more precisely at any given moment.

You can spray degreaser on the head and power wash it off with no side effects. Just be careful for other electrical components in the engine bay as they may be sensitive to water due to age, or improper install.

Hope this helps and happy DSM'ing.
