Hello, I'm new to these forums since I just recently bought my first 1G eclipse. I'm having some major problems with the car now. Recently, the car started to backfire a small bit but not bad. After a few weeks now the car is hesitating real bad during acceleration and backfiring as well, then backfires when decelerating. The car idles rough as well and will stall out if I don't give it gas but once it's at normal operating temp. it will idle decent. The car is missing as well from cylinder 2. I've replaced the spark plugs and replaced the injector as well. I can unplug the plug wire and injector and it makes no changes to the vehicle. Gas mileage is terrible now. When I first bought it, I was getting about 260-280 mile per tank. Now I'm getting around 200-250. I've used the ECU code checking guide and come back with no codes. So I'm running out of ideas of what it could be, plus it would help if I was a bit more knowledgeable with cars LOL. Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you in advance!
 
I had the same type of problems and did a compression test. I had 2 bent intake valves on number 1. A compression test will tell you which cylinder, then put the cylinder at tdc and put air into it. Air out of the exhaust is bent exhaust valves and visa versa for intake.
 
Well I finally got around to doing a compression test this morning. I tested cylinder 2 and came back with less then 20, then i checked cylinder 1 to see what it was reading and got 90.
 
Well good news is that a head swap is pretty easy. Honestly I would just find a good stock head.. Not sure how much they run where youre from.. but around here you can find one for around 100-120 bucks..

I'd highly suggest an OEM headgasket from mitsu.. they've been proven time and time again.. Take a look at your timing components & water pump while your at it.. if no further repairs are needed you can probably get it fixed for around 250 bucks.

Do your own work.. google is your friend.

ive recently had the same problem replaced the plugs and fuel filter and didnt change nothing i changed outt num 4 injector because it wasnt pulsing but this sounds like tthe same problem my 1g laser is having it runs fine if you dont start it for a couple of hours or on a cold start any ideas ???

Sounds like a bad crank sensor to me. Had the same problem with my 95 gst right after i rebuilt the engine. Had a brand new crank and cam sensor. It would run fine on a cold start and would even run till it warmed for a lil bit but then it would start acting up and backfire+misfire. Didn't through any codes. Before it started acting up everything was fine even driving but once it started acting up I couldn't do anything. Eventually it would cut off and not start till I let it set. So could be your crank sensor. Or cam. I replaced mine with i used one i had and fixed the problem.
 
It sounds like it could be ingition timing. Bad/ mis-adjusted CAS? I would test that first. I would also check your timing belt and see if all the timing marks line up before you pull the head. If it turns out that timing skipped if you got lucky and it only skipped a few teeth if it were me I would try and re-time, and do another compression test.
