Can I ask why you would do this?

A socket alone if you do it yourself is only a couple bucks..And makes for an easy change and instalation of the ecmlink socket, stock eprom chip, or modded eprom chip..

+1 If you're going through the trouble of de-soldering the factory eprom, why wouldn't you just add the socket and be done with it?

I bought a socket and it got lost by the people i gave it to to solder it on. If i didnt have to buy another one then i wasnt going to because i need to have my car running again, since its my DD. I dont plan on taking the chip out ever again, so that isnt a problem, im just worried about damaging the chip.

The eprom is off and ill have to wait a week before i can get another socket because of the holiday comming up. no place around here sells the sockets otherwise i would go buy one.

Absolutely not. The process of soldering a socket into the Board is to allow quick and easy removal and application of the eprom chip without soldering. The Boards of our ECU's are subjugated to enough abuse simply having the original eprom chip desoldered - much less the socket itself soldered in place. These things are very very temperamental when it comes to heat.

I would never recommend soldering an eprom directly to the board because at some point you'll likely want to remove it - say.. if ECMtuning comes out with an updated chip. It's a waste of time and effort. Sure - it may work - but it's not really the best idea. Go to radio shack, get a socket, and do it right.

Then i'd say the person you gave your ecu to owes you a socket...

Like Keiya stated, radio shack does sell sockets..There more expensive than the socket you already have since radio shack has overhead to deal with..

And Like Calan said.. A couple bux for a socket really doesn't outweigh the 300+ for the ecmlink chip,if something was to go Ari..And to mention if something was to go wrong and god forbid the ecu and chip were ruined..

It's like forgetting to pay car insurance, and you don't have it for one day..That one day you total your car, and have to pay out of pocket..When all you had to do was pay insurance..

Like said above sockets are to cheap not to just do the job right.
But,
Dont use a crapy socket from Radio Shack....
Also,
If your not comfortable doing the job yourself theres a few people on here that Still do it :)
