All "my car won't start" discussion threads are merged HERE. We've basically made it easier for those who insist upon not searching by grouping together all threads from those with similar issues so you can just scroll through and see some possible solutions. To search for info within this thread, use the "Search This Thread" feature in the black bar about 3" above what you're reading right now.

Could be anything from a loose battery terminal to internal engine damage, and literally everything in between which may involve the electrical, fuel, and ignition system...possibly even something that you screwed up while working on the car yourself. While it's unlikely we're going to diagnose and solve your problem over the internet, feel free to discuss any possible solutions.

I live in Canada and right now its not very warm out, about -30c
my car does not have a block heater too keep it warm.

I tryed to start my car this morning and it wouldent start, ive had this problem before but this time, the car doesnt crank at all it just makes a sound that sounds like an electric drill.

Whats wrong.

Thanks

The clutch switch has nothing to do with this. Check you starter, and ignition switch. Was anything done to the block?
If you didn't see the temperatufe gauge move at all why drive the car.
no i didnt do anything to the block... just pulled the head cleaned the top of hte block off and stuck this new head on... it was my only car at the time... and honestly i didn't pay attention i will admit that!!!!:notgood:
it could just be your starter, if the clutch pedal switch was unplugged or broken it would not click

do starters just decide to go out like that? when it was cranking it right before i pulled off the head.. thats what makes no sence to me i mean hell i can tear down a motor and put it back together but dame this has me stomped...

It could simply be a dead spot in your starter motor. My suggestion is to tap on the body of the starter while someone turns it over for you. As for your other question on if you needed to lone something up for the head, yes. You need to line up all of the timing marks with tdc or your going to damage the hell out of that top end again. Have you turned the crank over by hand at all? My suggestion to you first is to pull all your plugs out and rotate the engine by hand to make sure your timing is not off. Then if it turns without issue, reinsert the plugs and try to crank it.

If you tap the body of the starter and it starts turning all of a sudden you just likely had a stuck solonoid. It happens to all vehicles all the time. Its a starter thing. Give it a shot atleast before replacing unneeded parts.

Definitely electrical issue, only issue I've had by that clicking ended up being the factory anti theft being set off, might wanna check that. Buddy of mine just went through that recently, gave my 2 cents and it was it.

I have recently rebuilt my 6 bolt engine, and I am having issues getting my car started now. I go and turn the key and it sounds like the starter is not catching the flywheel. I have no clue if it makes a difference if I'm using a F5M33 trans or not, the starter came from a 1991 n/t eclipse five speed, and i have a 1992 with a 91's sixbolt with the trans listed above. Anyone know why it won't start?

Well, the first thing that you should do is compare the starter that you got with the old one you had. They have to have the same number of teeth be the same length etc... There is more info that you have to add to this post.
But if the engine is cranking over and you dont hear any clashing or grinding sounds, coming from the starter its not a starter problem. If you want to double check top see if the starter spins the flywheel look at the belts to see if the are moving, if yes the starter works no problem. Also try to find out what is the cold cranking power required to spin that starter, maybe your battery is not strong enough to spin it fast enough.

Also if the tranny is different and it matches up to the engine it should still start the car cause you still have the original flywheel bolted on your crankshaft.

good luck

Umm from my understanding....you need a diff starter depending on your platform. aka awd or fwd. there are differences. If you have fwd starter in awd car, (could be wrong here, might be backwards) but your starter wont catch the flywheel because the fwd is taller and awd flywheel sits lower.

You need to get the EXACT starter for your car.. I went through 3 different ones in my old gst before i finally got the proper one as Shucks and autozone both had the same ones listed for N/A FWD and Turbo FWD aswell as once giving me the one for an AWD... I finally freaked out on them and made them pull the ones they had in stock until i found out they were dummies and were just not looking in the right spot.. I compared untill i found the right one.... I had the same issue too the starter wouldn't catch..

Hey guys i have a 97 gst eclipse. Car turns on but makes a constent clicking sound. So i pushed start it and drove it to the shop, i turned to start my car and it started up again, so i replaced the starter and it wont start. My machnic tested all my wires and all is good. Any help ###. My car has been in the shop to long i miss my baby. =]>

In the morning i go to start my car and for some reason it'll start for a few seconds then it stalls. and when i go to start it back up it does the same thing then after a couple more tries it just tries to crank over but it can't, so i have to jump out and take out the ignition fuse and replace it after that it only takes 1 try to start up then it runs kinda rough when i try to accelerate the car starts to bog down. it kinda seems like the car is not getting fuel. i am stumped as to why it only does this when i drive the car for the first time every morning. anybody have a clue?

I recently bought a 97 eclipse gst and it wont start. After looking at it my dad and I came to the conclusion that the fuel pump isnt working. We checked the pump for power and found out its not getting power at all. Could someone please help. The car cranks it just wont turn over

Start with the basics, Check fuel by removing the fuel rail line (it's easiest) just have a small bucket or cup waiting while you crannk it just a touch and see if some comes out. Then check for spark and quality/gap of the plugs. Then keep an eye on the check engine light when you turn the key on, should come on for about 3sec. and shut-off that way we know your ecu should be ok, MPI relay should click as well (behind the sterio area I believe). Most important tho, check for fuel and spark and then get back with us.

Yeah the fuel and spark seem to be in check. Getting good spark. When I pour a little fuel into the engine it trys turn over and does for a brief second but then then turns off. I checked the relay and it's clicking too. I don't know if maybe there is a wire that could be off or something, but i definitely no there is no power getting to the fuel pump.

You could try a new relay but if you here it clicking on and off it should be good. Open up the ECU and make sure the caps arn't leaking. Does it have a re-wire kit on it? either way, time to start tracing the wires I guess.

Oh and make sure there's fuel in it, the level sender could be messed up.

Its also dumping fuel out of the exhaust manifold, what the hell does that mean because i know your not supposed to have fuel coming out of the exhaust side of the head.

I really want to help him find the answer to this because im puzzled its just dumping mad gas out and on the floor!:thumb:
